Domain Hosting Expiration Questions

I would like to start hosting outside of wordpress.com and have been waiting for the name to expire before hosting it at a different domain. However, I know that some hosting sites hold a domain name for a month or so after it expires just in case the owner changes their mind. Does WordPress do this? Or could I simply wait for my domain to expire then buy it the moment after it expires?

DON’T LET THE NAME EXPIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!

You can transfer the domain name registration to another registrar or easier yet – you can just point the name servers to your new host when you new host is configured to accept the domain name then you are good to go – WordPress.COM is a very low cost registrar.

If you let the domain registration expire there will be a time when it does not work at all and that will kill your traffic – you also run the risk that q squatter will grab your old name and hold it for ransom

You be welcome & good luck with the move

We see a study stream of people that let the domain name registration expire and the name is grabbed by a squatter or something –

Look on timethiefs site (she helps in the forum) you should find some guides on how to move your blog – there are also guides here in the support documents and WordPress.ORG has some approved hosts – you can also have WordPress.COM staff move your blog for you if you want – it is a paid option but then someone else does a bunch of the work for you – look at “Guided Transfer” in your upgrades section
