Domain in redemption period

  • Unknown's avatar

Help! I had my domain name registered through WordPress, but decided I wanted to use a different provider for my website. I accidentally let my WordPress account expire, and my domain name slipped into a ‘redemption period’, meaning my website no longer works. When I try to repurchase my domain, it says it is unavailable. Has anyone experienced this? My current website provider say that can’t help.

    Hello there,

It’s hard to keep track of all the different accounts and companies you work with to run your website. I’ve seen many people having issues with this.

The good news is that since your domain is in the redemption period, it can be restored for a fee.

After the grace period ends, your domain enters the redemption period, the length of which can vary. This means the domain name can still be renewed, but there is an $80.00 redemption fee required in addition to the normal renewal cost. (This is standard practice for domain registrars.)

Renewing a Domain in the Redemption Period
Depending on the type of domain and when it was registered you might be able to redeem it yourself. If your domain has that option it will still appear under your account Purchases after it enters redemption, and clicking the Renew Now button will cause the redemption fee of $80 to be added to the cart automatically. You will not be able to renew the domain without paying that additional fee.

If your domain does not offer the option to redeem it yourself it will be removed from your account when it enters the Redemption Period. In that case, please contact support for help redeeming the domain, and we will send you a link to make the required payment so we can recover the domain.

Try using the first method, by going to your Purchases, and if you don’t see an option there, check back to this thread as I will flag it so a staff member sees it.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi there,

Your domain is indeed in redemption. The charge is an $80 late renewal fee in addition to the $18 we charge to renew the domain. You should still see the domain listed on your Purchases page. If you click the Renew Now option, the redemption item will be automatically added to your cart and the $80 fee added to the total cost on checkout. For more information, please visit:

If you do not see that option, let us know.

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

No, there doesn’t seem to be a renew option.

Can you please confirm also that I can renew the domain name without having to renew (and pay for) my subscription to WordPress Premium? I no longer need that, just the domain name.

    Thanks.

To clarify, are you planning to use your domain with another hosting provider or service? If you recover only the domain that is fine as long as you are using the domain outside of WordPress.com.

However the only way to change the URL of your WordPress.com site from tessarosekingsite.wordpress.com to tessaroseking.com is to upgrade to one of our plans. It’s not possible for a site without a plan to use a custom address. If you wish to use tessaroseking.com as the address of your WordPress.com site you do not need the Premium plan however, the WordPress.com Personal Plan is also sufficient to give your site a custom address.

Yes, another website hosting provider. I don’t wish to use WordPress any more, apart from as a domain provider.

  • Thanks for confirming. There are two things you can do:

    • Pay the registration and redemption fees to redeem the domain.
    • Wait for the domain to be released.

I wouldn’t recommend the second solution, though, because it can take months before the domain is released and, when it finally is, someone else may register it before you.
If you want to use the domain now, I’d suggest recovering it.

I have already sent you the email with the invoice. If you decide to recover the domain, let us know here after you’ve paid, and we’ll start the recovery process.

Hi there, I’ve now paid the fees, so please reinstate my domain. Thanks!

  • Thank you! We’re working on getting it back, and will let you know as soon as that’s done.
