Domain Interruption
-
I currently have an active domain and wish to use it, but I want to make sure that my current site will not be affected until the design is complete and am ready to go live.

Hi amymcanalley9689,
What is the address of the site you are currently working on? Or are you thinking about creating a new site on WordPress.com and mapping or transferring the domain here?
You could start by creating a free site here, choosing a theme and adding content, then connect the domain whenever you are ready.
Just let me know and we can go from there.

@amymcanalley9689 we don’t see any sites of yours on our servers, at least not under this account. If you were running a site here, you could create it then map the domain when you are ready.
If you are running your own installation somewhere there could be other considerations to deal with.
If you aren’t sure, send the address for the site you are working on and we’ll confirm whether it’s hosted here with us.

I think you’re misunderstanding my question. I have not started creating a site here. My business already has a website, has had for years, not associated with WordPress. I am wanting create a site using my current business domain myself where I do not have to deal with a third party, and I thought WordPress would be the best avenue. I just want to make sure the site I have running, not associated with WordPress, will not be interrupted while I am constructing one through WordPress until I am ready to go live with the newly constructed site.

I think @gemmacevans already answered your question:

You could start by creating a free site here, choosing a theme and adding content, then connect the domain whenever you are ready. You’d need to upgrade the free plan to a paid one at some point in the future to map your domain to the WordPress.com site. Transferring any content from your unnamed existing site would depend what platform you are currently using.

Oh absolutely. Sorry we misunderstood. Your existing site won’t be affected by the creation of a new site. You can map your domain when everything is ready.
A few tips I’ve found in situations like this:
– Be sure you’re uploading images to our servers. If you’re “hotlinking” from the current host, even on accident, those images will stop working when you point the domain here.
– Where possible, use the same page names as you have on your existing host, and don’t give into the idea of getting rid of your content. So if you have a /about-our-company page there, make a page here by that same name. That way any search results you had pointing to the old version of the site will automatically be redirected to the new one when you go live.
– I recommend getting a paid plan while you’re working on the site, even if you aren’t ready to point the domain here yet. That will give you more features, and will also give you direct support access, which can be very helpful while you’re setting up your site.
– We do have importers for several other platforms, so if your old site content can be ported here, that will save you some time.
I hope this helps. Let us know if you have more questions as you go.
