A blog is type of website. WordPress.com sites display, by default, the posts or blog page on the front page. You display instead a static page on the front page, effectively hiding the posts page. You needn’t use the posts page, or even provide a link to it. For instructions on how to set a static homepage see the Set a Static “Home” Page (Front Page) support page.
