Domain Issues (Apparently Complicated by Google Apps)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello everyone,

Ok, so I’m having some major domain issues, which appear to be complicated by my desire to use Google Apps. I’ve been banging my head against the wall for a few hours now, and can’t seem to locate WordPress support (they just spin you in a never-ending loop), so I’m here in hopes of getting some help. Here’s my tale:

I registered http://www.chubbywerewolf.com from Name.com several months ago

The registration comes with a free Google Apps account, which it SAYS I activated but I never actually did until today.

I created my blog chubbywerewolf.wordpress.com the other day. Everything has been great up until now.

Earlier today, I wanted to set up my blog so that it would work with the domain I had previously purchased from Name.com. It required me to go into my Name.com account and change the Nameservers, but that was easy and it went fine.

http://www.chubbywerewolf.com was working fine for the better part of 2-3 hours today.

On a roll, I decided to go the next step and get my Google Apps account going. When I went in to create the account, it told me that I had to verify it with something called TXT and it would not allow me to do this until I changed the Nameservers BACK to ns1.name.com, ns2.name.com, and so on…

I did this, and it allowed me to verify that I own the domain name and finish creating the Google Apps account.

But now, after doing so, the domain http://www.chubbywerewolf.com domain is no longer working. I realize that this must be because the name servers are still configured for name.com. So I go back and change them to the following, as instructed by WordPress. (I have no idea why Name.com lists 2 before 1, but that is their doing, not mine).

    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

But now, even with the nameservers switched back, the domain STILL is not working. I have no idea what to do next.

At this point, while searching for some type of support, I find this link which provides a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT way for verifying domain owners, one which requires the user to still be in the stage where they are setting up the Google Apps account, something which I already have done.

I just have no idea how to try to repair this. The domain is not working… I know that much. And I doubt that the Google Apps are working the way they are supposed to, since I followed Google’s instructions for verifying the domain and not WordPress’ instructions.

The one thing I did try (and hopefully this did not make things worse) was to DELETE the domain from WordPress and then re-register it, paying an additional $12 (I’m told that my original $12 will be refunded to me since it is within 5 days of registering the domain). But even that has not helped.

    Can anyone help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Ok, I think I am making progress. The blog is now displaying properly.

In terms of getting the Google Apps thing reconciled, I’m now having a problem where, if I try to login at mail.chubbywerewolf.com, it takes me to my blog. I’m assuming that’s an error.

I did find this forum posting (see link below) and I’ve followed the instructions. I think the two problems are one-and-the-same (if not, can somebody please tell me). It now says that it will take 48 hours to verify that it is my domain. I’m assuming that once that happens, I’ll be able to access Google apps using mail.chubbywerewolf.com.

    Make sense?

I am still having problems accessing my Google Apps. Can anyone help? It has been 48 hours and nothing is working.

  • Since your domain is mapped here, you’ll need to configure Google Apps for Domains through our DNS panel.

    Please follow this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/

Thank you for the reply. The problems, at this point, are that:

    a) with all of the monkeying around I’ve done this week, I don’t really know where things stand with regard to my DNS records. Is there some way to go back to square one WITHOUT having to completely re-do my domain?

    b) The instructions you’ve linked to assume that the user has not yet registered their Google Apps account. That is not the case with me. So where do I start?

    Thanks.

  • a) Basically, the only thing you’ll need to do with your registrar is point the nameservers here. Once that’s done, you can edit all of the DNS info here. So, in short:

Via your registrar: Only point the nameservers here, remove all other DNS modifications.

Via us: Enter your DNS modifications here, delete everything to start over.

    b) Start at step 7: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/

    Hi macmanx,

Thanks for the reply. Some of the jargon is throwing me a bit, so I just want to clarify.

What you are saying is that the NAMESERVERS should be set to:

    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

Is that correct? That is what they are currently set to.

Now when you say “remove all other DNS modifications,” I am unclear. Are you referring to the DNS Management screen? If so, I have a list there of 15 different records. Too many to list, but if this forum supports images, I can post a screen capture.

Please let me know on these two questions first and then I’ll proceed with the modifications that can be done on this end.

  • Yes, those are the nameservers. If you want to start fresh, then you should start by removing the other DNS rules.

This is getting a bit complicated for a forum like this, so it would probably be better if you contacted us via http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

I contacted you guys via that link almost 24 hours ago. I got an initial response but when I sent a reply asking for clarification, I got nothing. That was 19+ hours ago.

I will be happy to forward that email to you if you want to supply me with an email address. Or if you prefer you can email me at (email visible only to moderators and staff) and I will then reply to that. I can also take a screen capture of what I am seeing on my end, which might be helpful to you guys.

    Thanks.

  • We’ll get to you as soon as possible.

We had a bit of a big issue this morning that took priority, and we’re in the process of catching up on other requests.
