domain last at sea

I purchased a domain and a subscription to a website plan, but then cancelled because I found the design interface really confusing. Anyways, I released the domain twinrains.com weeks ago, but can’t buy it from another site now. Can you help to track it down or give an idea how long that will take to be released?

Hi there, You’ll need Staff assistance on this and I’ve flagged this thread for their attention. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you concerning your domain.

  • Hi there!

Canceled domains are not immediately released, and they go through a series of steps before it’s possible to re-register them.
twinrains.com is still in a state called redemption. It’s possible to recover it at this point; however, an additional fee of $80 is required. Here you can read more about this:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/#redemption-period.

If you agree to that, let us know, and we’ll send you an email with the invoice.

Thanks for the info. Ya, clearly I went about it the wrong way and cancelling my domain rather than transferring it. But, tbh, 80$ for a redemption fee seems a bit over the top. Can’t you just release the domain?

Prior to cancelling my domain I read online somewhere that it would only take two weeks to be available again, but reading here that it is 90 days. I know better now, but is it possible to not be slapped with a 80$ fee for an honest mistake?

    thanks
    -J

  • Hi there,

The redemption fee is not something that our registrar can waive. If you don’t want to pay that fee, then you can wait two weeks until that exits redemption. After that, it’ll be released and you’ll be able to register it again.

Please note that once the domain is released anyone will be able to register it. You can read more here:

    Hi!

Thanks for the info. I have definitely waited more than two weeks. Is there a way to speed up the release of the domain?

    thanks,
    J

The redemption process is handled by the domain registrar and we have no control over when or how fast they go through this process nor do we get any notification or updates on the current status of the domain. The $80 redemption fee is also set by the domain registrar and isn’t something we can waive.

Your best bet to retain ownership of the domain is to pay that redemption fee to the registrar and recover the domain. Otherwise you just need to keep checking to see if it’s available for purchase. Like you said earlier, it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks up to 90 days before it’s released for purchase. Again, this isn’t something we can control.

We’re happy to help with that redemption process, so just let us know if you change your mind on that. Thanks!

if I do the redemption process and pay the fee, I will ultimately need to host my wix.com site. How does that work?

  • Once the domain is recovered here, you’ll be able to direct it anywhere (including Wix) by changing its name servers: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/change-name-servers/

You can also transfer the domain to a different registrar 60 days after recovering it: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/ (the 60 day hold period is imposed on all domain registrars by the organization which oversees us, ICANN)

    Hi again,

So, with a 60 day wait time, doesn’t it just make sense to wait until it is freed from the redemption period?

Is there any benefit to do that?

  • I don’t recommend trying to wait out the redemption period. The domain becomes publicly available to anyone, with no notice, and whoever gets to it first is the new owner. That’s pretty risky.

Instead, go ahead and pay the fee so we can secure the domain for you with out question. Then, you can map the domain to Wix as discussed. 60 days after domain recovery, you can transfer it to Wix if you like. But for now, I think you should do the redemption + mapping to make sure you don’t lose ownership.
