Domain link issue
-
Getting an error as shown below. We use a different domain host. Does this indicate that the the nameservers are incorrectly pointed to WordPress? Domain host claims it is correctly set to theirs. So could this be an issue with our wordpress configuration? Thanks in advance.
“Something unexpected happened while accessing this website. It looks like it doesn’t have an active domain connection upgrade to link the requested domain name to the WordPress.com site.
If this is your domain name and it has recently stopped working, it’s possible that your plan or domain may have expired. Please log in to your WordPress.com account and review the status of your plan and domain.”

Hi there, that error means that you have pointed the domain’s name servers to us, but you haven’t connected the domain to a site hosted here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
If your site is hosted elsewhere, the name servers should be instead pointed to your hosting provider.
Please let us know if you have any more questions!

Thanks. That is my confusion, as our domain host is displaying the nameservers as configured for their own, not wordpress. Just to confirm, from your perspective, is there no way that could be accurate?
Thank you.

Thanks. So to confirm, from your perspective, there is no way it could be accurate that our domain’s nameservers are being used to show that message?
Thank you.

Hello there,
Are you looking to host the site with WordPress.com?
Also, what is the domain you’re having trouble with exactly?
-
Hi, No not looking to host with WordPress at the moment. Just trying to understand if there is anything else that could generate that error message posted above. Here are the specifics that lead me to believe these should be connected successfully.
$ nslookup lccronpenn.org
…
Name: lccronpenn.org
Address: 192.0.78.13$ nslookup lccronpenn.wordpress.com
…
Name: lb.wordpress.com
Addresses: 192.0.78.12
192.0.78.13
Aliases: lccronpenn.wordpress.comSo with those addresses matching, I’m wondering if I have a misconfigured setting within our wordpress site that could be leading to the error message instead of our web page.
-
Ah, ok, what you need to do then is change the domain’s name servers through your domain registrar: https://www.startlogic.com/help/article/domain-management-how-to-update-nameservers
And change them to point to your hosting provider, not us. You’ll get your hosting provider’s name servers from them.
-
Thank you. I’ve done and re-done that multiple times over the last week, and they currently show they are pointed to that provider’s name servers. So that’s why I was asking if there is any other reason it would be showing the error above.
Since lccronpenn.org brings up the correct address, it seems to be accurately point to the our provider’s nameservers. And yet we still see the error.
-
It looks like the domain’s A record is still pointing to us too.
You’ll need to change that through your registrar too: https://www.startlogic.com/help/article/dns-management-how-to-add-edit-and-delete-dns-records-video
In this case, just delete any A records there, and it will default to where the name servers are pointing.
-
Yes, the A records are pointed to the the IPs associated with lccronpenn.wordpress.com , as the intention is for lccronpenn.org to point there. Is that incorrect?
Which records should be used to point our domain to lccronpenn.wordpress.com? And what should those record’s value be?
Right now we have 2 A @ records for 192.0.78.13 and 192.0.78.12.
Thanks.

Ok, earlier you mentioned “not looking to host with WordPress at the moment.” so we weren’t working at it from that direction, sorry!
If you want lccronpenn.org to connect to https://lccronpenn.wordpress.com/ which would mean you’ll be hosting with us, please follow the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
Connecting a custom domain like lccronpenn.org to a WordPress.com site like https://lccronpenn.wordpress.com/ will require a paid plan, any paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Please let us know if you have any more questions!

So it’s not possible to have a domain from StartLogic and have it point to lccronpenn.wordpress.com? Or it is, but requires a paid WP plan?
Sorry, I’m confused. This was all working about 2 weeks ago and I’m fairly certain we did not have a paid plan then either. Someone accidentally changed some settings in StartLogic and I’ve been trying to recover it.
Is there a way this would have worked 2 weeks ago without a paid WP plan?
-
Hmm, yeah it really shouldn’t have been working that way, since we’ve always charged for a domain connection or required a paid plan. Paid upgrades help us cover our hosting costs.
For what it’s worth, here’s the DNS history I can see:
https://dnshistory.org/historical-dns-records/a/lccronpenn.orgIt’s possible that you had a “Stealth redirect” or something similar, which would make your domain show in the address bar, but secretly show the contents of https://lccronpenn.wordpress.com/ without revealing the real address. I don’t recommend that as it’s bad for SEO and usability, but you’re free to do it anyway, or a regular redirect if you’d like (it’s free and a bit better for SEO.)
The personal plan would likely be a better option for you: you’d get to connect the domain properly, get rid of ads, accept donations, and get direct support when you need help, among other things:
