Domain mapped: now nothing visible
-
I’ve set up a wordpress website, which looked fine. Bought a domain from Fasthosts, got them to map it to the wordpress website.
Now I can’t see my website at all, not even when I edit and try to preview a page or post. It’s been well over 24 hours now and Fasthost say everything is fine at their end.
Can someone help please?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi.
When I enter that domain name into the domain helper, it says that domain mapping isn’t active. You can try it yourself at this link.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-helper/
Did you set up the WordPress site here on WordPress.com? If so, here’s information on the steps needed to successfully map the custom domain name.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
So, in addition to the settings at Fasthost, there would be the corresponding mapping here on WordPress.com that would need to take place.
-
Thanks noebiewan. When I follow that first link, it tells me that my domain is registered but not using WordPress.com nameservers. Is that what you’re seeing?
Yes my website is set up on WordPress.com.
What do you mean by the corresponding mapping that needs to take place here on WordPress.com? Sorry but I don’t understand. There’s obviously something I’m missing but I can’t see what. -
Sure. I’ll try to explain.
The process is outlined here.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
First, you would need to add the domain mapping service here on WordPress.com.
Then have Fasthost update the DNS settings on their end, if they haven’t already done so.
The info at the link above is step-by-step, but feel free to reply here if any of it seems confusing.

Thanks – I think I’ve done that. On the domains page it says that the primary domain is refugeeresponseeastsomerset.uk. It says mapped domain with a green primary domain tick.
Then if I click onto the next screen and then DNS records, it says CNAME *.refugeeresponseeastsomerset.uk and underneath Handled by WordPress.com.
Then the same (without the *.) next to A, MX, and NS.
Sorry, I do find it very confusing, and really appreciate your help! -
I see that extension .uk
When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one wherein Staff have to add a zone record to make domain mapping possible we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you.
How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.
After Staff add the zone record you will be able to follow-through.

Okay. That’s helpful info.
It sounds to me like things are set on this end, but that the DNS settings aren’t correct at Fasthost.
Name servers on their end for the domain need to be set to the following.
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMWhen I lookup the domain in WHOIS, it’s still showing name servers as livedns.co.uk.

OK – thanks @timethief. So the .uk makes it more complicated then? Maybe that’s why it was cheap! :-(
I am already subscribed for notifications so many thanks. And thanks @noebiewan too. You’re saying it’s not right at the Fasthosts end either?
-
Yes. If the WHOIS record is up to date, then the name servers at Fasthost haven’t been changed to WordPress.com, which is an essential part of the process.
-
Yay! That’s done it @noebiewan! I think I’m sorted! Many thanks! :-)
NO! Oh no! It worked and I could see it and now it’s gone again! What’s gone wrong now?
-
-
Heartening to see your efforts, by the way. Makes me wish I was local so I could help out.
-
Thanks @noebiewan – it’s an important cause and I said I’d set up the website for free – but am not having tremendous success! As you can tell I’m no pro!
Anyway, I don’t know how come you can see it as I can’t neither on my computer nor iPad.
Why might that be? -
The web is weird like that, some times. It may take awhile for it to sort itself out, depending on where a person connects from.
You might try this, and see if it works afterwards.
-
Cleared the cache, and tried it on a different laptop that’s never looked at that url before: just getting blank screens.
Can you still see it @noebiewan? -
Yes. Just tried four different browsers and got it on all four.
It may have something to do with something called DNS propagation, and if so, should correct itself. It sometimes takes as much as a day or two.
-
-
It appears that DNS propagation is on its way:

New York for some reason isn’t showing the site, so I agree with @noeniewan that waiting a day or so might clear things up.
I can access the site without issue on my end as well. I think everything is set up correctly.
Keep us updated on whether or not you’re able to see your site. Thanks!
