Domain Mapped Site Keeps Becoming Unavailable

I recently had a WP hosted site with Dreamhost that I canceled and imported into a wp.com site. I mapped the domain to bladeronner.com. It took over six hours before the mapping took affect, and then it was spotty (some pages got 404 errors, but the home page was fine.) Finally, late last night everything seemed to be working fine (all pages loading fine).

Now, the site is down again. Another site I had hosted on Dreamhost and transferred to wp.com (fstopbeyond.tv) works fine. The only difference is that one is not mapped (fstopbeyond.wordpress.com). So, I’m inclined to think it’s an issue on the wp.com side.

The problematic url is http://bladeronner.com. It’s mapped to http://bladeronner.wordpress.com. I have the primary domain set to bladeronner.com in the Domain settings of my Dashboard. I have to switch back to bladeronner.wordpress.com to get the site to work again.

    Any ideas?

I see http://bladeronner.com/ just fine. It is using the greyzed theme. I clicked around and don’t see any issues.

Do note that it can take 24-72 hours for a DNS record change to propagate through all the tens of thousands of nameservers scattered around the world. Generally it takes 24 hours or less, but I’ve personally seen it take 72 on several occasions. This isn’t something that wordpress or anyone has any control over. It all depends on how busy the nameserver system is and how many changes are queued up at any given time.

So far just for today it is being reported:

    Domains deleted: 389,253,527
    New domains: 131,709
    Expired domains: 94,181
    Transferred domains: 122,480

That is just short of 390 million records that have to be updated on each of tens of thousands of nameservers around the world.

Check DNS status for different record types – see how the changes have taken place

@thesacredpath. Yes. That’s it. Very weird. I figured it was the propagation issue, but since it was working fine last night, I figured it at least propagated to me. I was thrown off by it being down again today.

Thanks for all your quick replies. You’re great!

I’ve experienced that as well, and it all depends on which nameserver your browser/ISP ends up connecting with at any given time. Each time you click a URL, you might end up connecting with a different nameserver.

    It will settle down soon.
