Domain Mapping

I am new to this whole domain mapping business and don’t have much technical knowledge. I wanted a website under my name, so I registered a domain called “pragatiagarwal.info” with godaddy.com. I did this yesterday. I want my blog http://pragatiagarwal.wordpress.com with this domain address (pragatiagarwal.info). So, I went to godaddy.com and changed the domain name servers to ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com and ns3.wordpress.com.

This is the message that is being displayed if I go to http://dnsstuff.com:

    “How I am searching:
Searching for pragatiagarwal.info A record at j.root-servers.net [192.58.128.30]: Got referral to B9.INFO.AFILIAS-NST.ORG. (zone: info.) [took 162 ms]
    Searching for pragatiagarwal.info A record at B9.INFO.AFILIAS-NST.ORG. [204.74.113.33]: Got referral to ns3.wordpress.com. (zone: pragatiagarwal.info.) [took 4 ms]
    Searching for pragatiagarwal.info A record at ns3.wordpress.com. [72.233.2.19]: Refused! [took 3 ms].

    Response:
The DNS server reported that it refuses to respond to the query. There’s a problem with the DNS server for pragatiagarwal.info.

    1. Is this okay?
    2. If I buy the domain mapping function, will my blog at wordpress (http://pragatiagarwal.wordpress.com) point to http://pragatiagarwal.info and vice versa?

Also, I would appreciate it if someone could please tell me what I need to do next.

I’m afraid I don’t know much about how the domain mapping works, but I do know that you need to buy the upgrade here at WordPress.com whether or not you buy your URL through them. They should be able to do this for you without problem, although I wouldn’t expect that to get done over a weekend. Try on Monday. Instructions are in the FAQ here:

raincoaster, thanks for replying. I did read the FAQ page. I see that your blog has its own domain. So, do I need to do anything now or just wait? What about that message that shows up on dnsstuff.com?

You’ll need to set up the payment and apply for the Domain upgrade, which the FAQ walks you through. You’re getting that message because the domain swap hasn’t been approved by WordPress, which it will be once the upgrade is processed. For now, I’d make a parking page at that URL with a link to your blog here, something like:

“Coming soon, the lovely home of our new blog. Until moving day, you can access it here” with a link to your WP blog. Then when the switch goes through they’ll go directly to the blog and it’ll be a smooth transition.

I’m a bad example of the domain upgrade, because frankly WordPress.com just did it for me while I was away on a trip. They did it as an example of how it would look when others upgraded, so I didn’t handle a single aspect of the transition.

Oh I see. So, I need to pay $10 first? I thought that the FAQ page said that we should wait and see if the name servers show up and only then fork out $10.

If you go to http://pragatiagarwal.info, you get an error message. I don’t know how I would add that “Coming Soon…” message because the domain has not been hosted anywhere till now. I am trying to host it here at WP.

Thanks again for all your help! I appreciate it.

No, as I understand it you have to pay before resetting the nameservers will work, but the payment won’t be processed until everything is working. If I were you I’d just wait till Monday and send a feedback and ask directly, if searching the forums doesn’t solve the issue.

raincoaster, thanks a ton! it’s working already….I just paid $10.

Wow, that’s great! Glad to hear it.

Just for reference, I’d send that one in via email on the weekends. I know staff has said that when it’s something concerning money, it should do right in and not wait until Monday.

I say that in a nice sense meaning folks shouldn’t have to wait for an upgrade. Not in a “oh, we want the money” way.

Sure, drmike. I understand what you mean :) After raincoaster told me that it might not get done until I pay $10, I did some reasoning and it actually made sense that until I upgrade, the mapping won’t get complete.

Both of you, thanks for your help!
