I just want to clarify the difference between hosting and domain registration.
If you buy a domain from a company, that company is your domain registrar, and you need to pay them for ownership of your domain.
Your host is the company you pay for server space for your website itself. If you buy a domain from WordPress.com, and use it for a site here, we are both your registrar and your host. However, if you buy a domain somewhere else and map it to a site here, then the other company is your registrar, but we are your host.
So, to come to your question: Do you currently have a website somewhere other than WordPress.com, at another host? If you take the domain you’re using for that website and map it to a WordPress.com site instead, we’ll become your host so the site at your current host will stop working and you won’t need to pay them for hosting anymore.
BUT you will still need to keep paying the company where you bought the domain so the domain doesn’t expire. Mapping only connects the domain to us, it doesn’t renew the domain each year.

Thank you, that was what I was not clear on. I was planning on parking my domain but it would be nice to map it to WP instead.
