If you want to move a domain to another hosting provider, it is best that you do not cancel the domain.
There is no guarantee that a canceled domain will become available to register somewhere else, and you may not be able to get it back for future use elsewhere. You can read more about the implications of canceling a domain here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#cancel-a-domain-name
There are other options (aside from canceling) if you are wanting to continue using the same domain through a different hosting provider. You can read more about these other options here:

Your .com domain expired in May and is showing as being in the redemption period. Or did the automatic renewal go through ok but you cancelled it afterwards?
Lets add a modlook tag to this for staff to assist you. -
I turned off automatic renewal a while ago because of some big financial losses. I was going to finally renew it today, but there is an $80 late renewal fee that I cannot pay. So instead I would like my domain name, greenandclover.com, to be unmapped so I can register it elsewhere. Please do whatever needs to be done to fully remove it from wordpress.

Howdy,
I can understand the frustration. Domains can be surprisingly confusing things. Let’s see if we can’t at least get you some more information…
Due to ICANN rules, domain expiration is not an instant process. We’ve got a support document that explains it a bit further:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-expiration/
In short, our hands are tied as far as timing is concerned. We can’t “unmapp” an expired domain and make it become available elsewhere any faster, I’m afraid. It looks like this domain won’t be out of the redemption period for another couple of weeks. Once that happens, you SHOULD be able to register it elsewhere. But there’s no guarantee I’m afraid.
Take a look and let us know if anything is unclear or you have any further questions.
