Every domain mapping is an upgrade. It is NOT possible to use a custom domain URL without selecting a plan and paying for an upgrade.

There are no monthly payment plans and no bulk deal upgrades. We are billed annually. Also note that purchase orders are not accepted. We must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase.WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade.
Premium upgrades do not include any premium themes which are all individually priced one time upgrades. The Business upgrade includes access to all premium themes but also note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.

It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Timethief, thank you for your quick response. I currently have a free account. Can I map the domain without upgrading to “personal account ($2 per month)”? I am not clear if the upgrade is for mapping or a paid plan. Thanks

Domain mapping is $13 per year. However when I click “already have a domain” – click blue Add button, it automatically asked me to upgrade to Premium account and a charge of $99. How can I upgrade to Domain Mapping only on my free account and pay for $13 a year? Thank you

Domain mapping is $13 per year.
Some time ago now (months ago) individual upgrades were discontinued. Only those who had domain mapping upgrades that had not expired were allowed to renew at the same rate. Others have to purchase an upgrade bundle. More information at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-1118?replies=10#post-2641970

Hi Timethief, thank you for your answer again. If I understand you correctly, I have to upgrade to premium to map my website, or move my website to some other hosting services. Is this right?

HI there,
It was previously possible to add a domain mapping as a stand-alone upgrade, but that was changed last year. It is now only possible to add mapping as part of a plan.
However, you don’t need to use the Premium Plan. You can also add a domain mapping as part of the Personal Plan. To do that, first go to My Site ->Plans and add the plan there. Then you’ll be able to map your domain via My Site ->Domains ->Add.
