Domain mapping
-
I currently have a Blogger account using their version of domain mapping. I like the better functionality of WordPress and would like to switch and use the WordPress domain mapping (so I can avoid paying hosting fees). I have found a custom theme that I would like to upload for my new WordPress blog. Is that possible with domain mapping or do I have to pay hosting fees to gain the “theme freedom” that WordPress.org provides?

wordpress.org requires you to have a host
wordpress.com will host your wordpress blog, but it will be limited compared to what you can do with the downloaded version of wordpress and the plugins available
if you don’t want to pay a hosting fee, go for wordpress.com but be aware it will be very restrictive towards html and scripts!

Well, I definitely do not want a blog.wordpress.com address. I want domain mapping so I can keep my URL. But if that means I am limited to the few themes that WordPress.com offers I guess I will have to buy a hosting plan. Is my logic correct?

You will have to pay for domain mapping here; it’s $10 a year. There are five pages of themes to choose from, and a custom header goes a LONG way with some of them, but there’s another alternative.
IF you learn CSS, you can buy the CSS upgrade $15 per year, and completely customize the look of your blog. There are a couple of threads (I think they both have Sandbox in the title if you want to search for them) where people are showing off what they’ve done with custom CSS. My own blog is custom. But don’t buy the upgrade if you don’t already know CSS; there is virtually no support for it in the forums and none from staff. You’re on your own with it.
Independent hosting will allow you total freedom, of course, but there’s the cost.
