Domain Mapping

  Our business is new therefore we don’t yet need a big Plan, nor can we afford the Premium or Businnes Plans at the moment. We already own a domain we purchased outside of WordPress, but we would like to map it to our wordpress site. Is domain mapping with already owned custom domain included in the Personal Plan or it can only be used, when one buys the Premium or higher plans? When I try to map the already owned domain, I type it in and it only offers the premiun. Could you please clarify it for me?

  Yes, the Personal plan is quite suitable to use to map a domain you already own. For some reason the WordPress.com instructions are misleading and by default a Premium plan is added to your basket. According to staff the thing to do is to just buy the Personal plan on its own. Once that has been paid for then a domain credit will be added to your account. That domain credit can then be used to map your domain.

  Another quick note about upgrades. If you decide that you want to move up from Personal to Premium and do so before the Personal Plan expires, you’ll only pay the difference between the two plans. In ten or eleven months from now you could upgrade to Premium and only pay the difference, which can help minimize expenses for a new business.
