Domain Mapping

I have recently decided to create a website for my small business. Being completely ignorant of the whole process, I’ve tried to follow advice from a few different sources. The first thing I did was purchase my domain name from GoDaddy. Then, I came to WordPress for hosting. I upgraded my account to include domain mapping so my site would just say .com instead of wordpress.com. This is confusing to me because I already own the domain as a .com, so why am I paying another company more money for .com? Then I found an awesome YouTube video that seems to make this whole process very easy. WordPress is recommended, so I figured I was doing pretty good. I decided to cancel my upgrade with WordPress, and go with Host Gator (also use wordpress). However, when I set up my account with Host Gator and began to set up my new site, I’m being directing to a screen that says I have to log in (to WordPress) and purchase domain mapping for my .com to work.

I know I’ve just confused myself and should have done more research before jumping in, but the fact that I have to pay another $100 a yr just to have my site say .com seems a little crazy. So, my question is ‘What do I do now?’ I can’t seem to do anything from Host Gator bc I’m redirected to the screen for WordPress domain mapping anytime I try to go to my site’s address. Am I supposed to transfer my domain? Do I cancel HostGator and pay the extra $100 for domain mapping? Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi there,

The first thing you need to understand is that even though you own a .com domain, you also need to host your site. WordPress.com and Hostgator are hosting providers and therefore you need to purchase a hosting plan.

Now, if you don’t want to purchase the Premium plan at $96 you can opt-in for the Personal plan at $48. Have a look at our plans here:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    Hi there,

The first thing I did was purchase my domain name from GoDaddy. Then, I came to WordPress for hosting.

In general when you choose WordPress.com for hosting, you have the option to choose and register a domain here in WordPress.com.
WordPress.com has a free hosting plan and paid hosting plans.

Free plan : You don’t pay anything as WordPress.com does your site hosting for free. You can choose your domain name in WordPress but you will have wordpress.com attached to your site URL under free plan.

Paid Plans : There are three paid plans and you can choose a plan according to your business requirement. Here you have option to choose a domain in WordPress without having a wordpress.com attached to it. Please click the below link for more information on plans.

But in your case since you already purchased a domain from GoDaddy, you can just map existing domain to WordPress.com but it is required that you need to be in one of the paid hosting plans to accomplish the same. So you can map your existing domain in GoDaddy with WordPress.com for as low as $48 and enjoy hosting and awesome customer support .

I decided to cancel my upgrade with WordPress, and go with Host Gator (also use wordpress).

Host Gator is totally different hosting provider and doesn’t have any connection with WordPress.com. When you say Host Gator also use WordPress, you are talking about WordPress.org.

Both(WordPress.com and WordPress.org) are different products. You can find out the differences between them here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Hope this clarifies your confusion.

    Thank you.
