domain mapping

What is this::: $17.00 per year plus registration costs at your current provider

    Hello,
In order to map your existing domain to your WordPress.com website you would need a paid plan (Personal Plan or higher) and also, you would need to purchase a domain mapping upgrade.

Since you are not transferring the domain at WordPress.com but just pointing it to your website you will still need to pay the registrar (the platform where you purchased your domain, such as GoDaddy, 1&1, and others) to keep ot active every year, as well as all the active plans and upgrades your purchased at WordPress.com. You can read more about domain mapping here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

If you would like to manage both the domain and hosting in the same place, you may consider transferring it, so n the future, you’ll manage all aspects of your domain here at WordPress.com, including renewal, cancellation, or a future transfer. You can read more about domain transfer here https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

Sorry – the question I thought was clear. I understand my regular registration annual costs with the existing registry company will remain with them should we keep them as the register.

We need to know whether or not there will be an additional $17.00 cost with either WORDPRESS or the existing domain registry office in order to point the name to your servers for hosting?

We want to use (or maybe not) WordPress as the host and continue to use Hover as our domain registry. Please clarify.

    No problem!
The annual 17$ fee will be paid at WordPress.com every year, as it is the platform who’s offering the domain mapping feature. The only fee you will have to pay at your current registrar is the annual domain fee as usual.

Hope this answered all your questions!

$17/ year on top of the hosting fee? Wow. Criminal. A re-direction takes no work what-so-ever.

I understand, If that’s the case you may consider transferring the domain, If your domain has all the necessary prerequisites and it is not locked by your registrar it would be a more convenient choice, that way you would have to pay for domain fee and hosting only and all in one place (the WordPress.com platform), and you wouldn’t need to pay for domain mapping of course.

  • Where are you seeing the $17 price quote? Domain mapping from another provider is now free with a plan at Personal or above. It has been for a bit.

  • It sounds like an edit needs to be made there! They changed this some months ago. I don’t see it on my end, but maybe certain countries missed the edit. It should say:

Included in paid plans, but registration costs at your current provider still apply

@darciemg is right- domain mapping subscription is included with plans at Personal or above

  • I’ve tagged this for staff to clarify why you might be seeing the price listed there.

  • Thanks, it should be a bit clearer now, you’ll only see the prompt if you didn’t choose a plan that includes Domain Mapping at the beginning.

Please keep in mind that you can always skip this step and upgrade to a plan that includes Domain Mapping later too.
