  Hi there,

  Domain mapping associates your domain name with your WordPress.com site, while your site is hosted at WordPress.com, your domain could be registered elsewhere, for example, with Godaddy, and you pay for the subsequent renewals there. Mapping is only possible on an upgraded Plan.

  Domain Transfer, however, transfers the domain registration to WordPress.com, meaning both your domain and site can be maintained and renewed from your account.
