domain mapping
-
Hi, Several years ago I had a blog neliprahova.wordpress.com or blog.neliprahova.com (I can’t remember) which was mapped to my website http://www.NeliPrahova.com. I then stopped the blog as I wanted to incorporate it onto my website but I’m not considering again an option with the mapping via wordpress. I was not clear from the website about the prices for a small business. It mentiones something like $20? As I think the mapping prices were different. Can you please point me to right link to check prices so I can decide.
Thank you -
Hello!
Here is a link where you can find a feature and price comparison for all WordPress.com plans:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/The current price for the domain mapping upgrade is $18/year. The paid plans include an upgrade credit that makes this free for the first year. After the first year, this cost is additional to renewal for your hosting plan.
You must purchase a paid plan to use domain mapping with a WordPress.com site. Since you mention it has been several years since you used domain mapping, this may be different than it was for you before.

Thank you for the answer.
Yes, I saw the pricing as per the link but I’m unclear – can I have the mapping if I don’t have a paid plan with wordpress?
I have my domain and server with smugmug and their platform so I only want the blog to be on wordpress and linked with my website on smugmug. I do not need at present the full wordpress service.
Thank you -
Hello again!
…can I have the mapping if I don’t have a paid plan with wordpress?
No. Domain mapping is only offered as an upgrade on paid plans. You must purchase a paid plan to purchase domain mapping.
One small consolation: all paid plans include a credit that makes domain mapping free for the first year of the paid plan.

Thank you. And following the first year it will be $18 plus the domain.
Since I won’t be using the main function of wordpress would it matter if I chose the cheapest one? The mapping comes with any paid plan right?Would this policy be revised as it’s a shame I have to pay for something I will not be able to use. I guess you won’t be able to adivse, but still just to ask – any other options out there where I can use only the mapping service since wordpress doens’t offer this option?
Thank you -
Hello again!

Yes. You will pay the domain registrar for the domain renewal. After the first year of hosting at WordPress.com, you will pay WordPress.com for the hosting plan renewal plus the domain mapping renewal. The current price of the domain mapping renewal is $18.

Yes, domain mapping is available on all paid plans.

The scope of the effort here is supporting sites hosted on WordPress.com, but I doubt that I would be censored for suggesting an alternative. There are less expensive hosting plans where you could run an Open Source WordPress.org site and possibly connect that as a subdomain to smugmug. But there are also differences other than price in that kind of implementation. It is not the better choice for everyone just because it might cost less.
If you want to consider it further, here are a couple of links that provide more information about the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com:

Hey folks, just to clarify some recent changes and what we mean by mapping:
$18 / year is the cost of a domain registration. With that alone, you can make your domain redirect to the wordpress.com address. You also get privacy protection on your whois data, which is nice for avoiding spam. And, you can use the domain here or elsewhere, or just keep it in case you want to use it later. It’s kind of akin to domain parking you might see at another registrar. With that cost, if you prefer to point your site to some other nameserver, that’s totally OK.
Mapping, meaning that your custom domain points to and replaces a .wordpress.com address, is not available anymore as a separate upgrade. But it is free with all paid plans:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/If you host your site here with a paid plan, you’ll use our DNS, and you would be able to point a subdomain like photos.yourgroovydomain.com to your Smugmug site.
And yeah — if hosting elsewhere works better for you, that’s okay. Our main offering is providing hosting, security, SSL, maintenance, and common helpful add-ins, as well as direct support for our paid users. We aim to make having a WordPress site simpler. If you are comfortable managing that on your own or hiring someone else as needed, an installation somewhere else may suit you well.
