  Do I have the option of mapping my domain now and transferring it at a later time?

  Yes you can map your domain now and transfer soon after it.

  Domain mapping associates your domain with your WordPress.com site, but the domain continues to be registered, and paid, at the other registrar.

  When you will transfer the domian, all future renewals of your domain and plan for your WordPress.com site are managed and paid on your WordPress.com account.
