  I have registered my domain with an outside provider but I want to build a very simple website with wordpress. I will start with the free version and then add features (it is only me and it is my first website)

  You’re more than welcome to create a free website with us using the free example.wordpress.com address we’ll provide to you.

  But if you have an existing domain you want to use with that site, that will require the domain mapping upgrade included in all our paid plans. There is no way to use your own domain on a free site without upgrading.
