Domain mapping?

  • Unknown's avatar

    A domain that I want has been already registered in WP. But the page says, “…is no longer available. The authors have deleted this site.” So if I want to purchase a domain without .wordpress, this domain should be available, right? Can you explain domain mapping?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there –

    Domain mapping is the process of registering a custom domain and mapping it to your site so that when visitors arrive, they’ll see your custom domain in their browser’s address bar instead of the original wordpress.com site address. More information can be found here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    What is the name of the custom domain name that you are hoping is available?

    The deleted name is gone forever. deleted-site.wordpress.com

    But you can Register (if availiable) deleted-site.com and map it to junk-name.wordpress.com if you want and all visitors will see is deleted-site.com when they visit.

    The base WordPress.COM name does not really matter much – it gets covered up – that is what domain mapping does – cover up the original domain name here at WordPress.COM

    staff-doublebassd I don’t own it, but it doesn’t appear anyone does: handmadehouse.com

    @leahrenter

    handmadehouse.wordpress.com is no longer available.
    The authors have deleted this site.

    Please note what auxclass stated above. It does not matter a feather or a fig what the underlying .wordpess.com URL is when you are domain mapping.

    Assuming handmadehouse.com is available for purchase, then if you would like to use this domain you will first need to set up domain mapping.

    In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

    See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

    Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
