Domain Mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey guys,

I’ve posted about this a few times, but still can’t figure it out. Hoping someone can help.

    I own these two URLs:
    http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com
    http://theinfluenceofteachers.com

Right now, the first one is active. The second one re-directs to the first.

I want to make the second URL the main one (i.e. just remove the word ‘WordPress’ from the URL, keep all the content).

I did domain mapping, and when I switched it over, I tried to access navigation bar elements and kept getting this message:

The requested URL /praise/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Anyone know what could be up?

This is an issue at work, so any help would be really, really appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Ted

    Hi Ted,
Did you see justjennifer’s reply to you in the other thread? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/url-switch?replies=3#post-603850 We need to know the answers to the questions she asked you so we can help.

    Hey guys,

I actually bought the domain mapping a while ago (a couple of weeks). When I use it, though (when I make http://theinfluenceofteachers.com the primary domain), the above stuff happens — all the navigation bar menu items don’t work. I get this message, as noted above:

The requested URL /praise/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Here’s a new thought that may be dumb: what if I un-installed the entire back-end on http://theinfluenceofteachers.com? I’d still have the URL, but if I un-installed the back-end, would mapping work?

And yea, basically all I want to do is remove the word “wordpress” from the URL “http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com.” I want to keep everything else the same content-wise.

Let me know if I can answer more questions.

    Respectfully,

    Ted

  • It looks like you might be using domain forwarding or masking with your registrar, which will cause a redirection loop when used with domain mapping.

Everything else looks fine here, so I recommend contacting your registrar to get that sorted out.

Yea, but when I take OFF domain forwarding, it still doesn’t seem to work. Could it be anything else?

  • Well, domain forwarding is what’s causing the problem. So, take that off first, and we’ll work forward from there.

This is what’s happening right now with domain forwarding:

    theinfluenceofteachers.com (via forwarding) > theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com (via mapping) > theinfluenceofteachers.com (via forwarding) > theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com (via mapping) > theinfluenceofteachers.com > theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com > theinfluenceofteachers.com > theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com

And so on, with no end in sight.

I 100 percent agree that you know more than me about all this (maybe even 300 percent agree), but I’ve turned off domain forwarding a few times. If I turn off domain forwarding and I map http://theinfluenceofteachers.com as the main site, I get a broken site with two links and a search bar — and nothing else.

I know this is against WP protocol, but could someone maybe e-mail me about this? I really need help here. I have no idea what’s going on with all this stuff and I’m getting more and more confused.

My e-mail is (email visible only to moderators and staff) if someone would be willing to help.

  • Sure, we can discuss this over email, just contact us via support@wordpress.com

    I have the same problem.

    I purchased fashionfunctions.com a while ago.

I then started fashionfunctions.wordpress.com. I want to use the wordpress editor and have it hosted by wordpress, but have the site as fashionfunctions.com.

I did the domain mapping through wordpress, then went into my domain settings on Domain.com. I changed the nameservers to ns1.wordpress.com, etc. Then I made fashionfunctions.com my main domain.

It worked for about three hours, then I started getting the Google 404 Not Found page. What happened? If I switch back to fashionfunctions.wordpress.com, it works fine. What happened?

More important? How do I fix it?

  • http://fashionfunctions.com/ appears to be working properly.

It can take domain changes up to 72 hours (though usually much less) to propagate to your ISP. Unfortunately, we have no control over this as it all depends on how often your ISP refreshes their DNS cache.
