domain mapping

I just got a refund for an automatic renewal for domain mapping because I thought I didn’t need it, but now my website is going crazy. I imported all my WordPress.com posts to my new host. Obviously they still have the old url. But when people saw them they were seeing those posts on my new site and design.
Now, I looked at an old post by clicking on a link I had made to it within my new site (which had always taken me to that post on my new site) and it took me directly to my old wordpress.com site.
Is that because domain mapping expired?
I renewed it to see if that would fix it but so far it did not.
I’m confused as to what exactly is happening to cause this. Please help!

    Hello there!

Because your domain is not registered with us, and because you are using your own server, rather than hosting at WordPress.com, you do not need to set up mapping with us.

The mapping will have to take place between your domain registrar and your website host.

You’ll have to find out your name servers for your new website servers, and set your domain (registered at GoDaddy) to point to them.

The support staff with your webhost and your domain registrar should be able to help with this process. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to your files since you’ve transferred.

I did notice that you purchased Domain Mapping today here at WordPress.com. You do not need this, if you’re not managing your site on our servers. If you’d like, I can cancel that upgrade and refund your cost. Let me know if I can do this for you.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

The mapping fixed the problem though, so I’m not sure how I would do that on my own. What it is, is old links to my WordPress.com url that are on pinterest etc. need to be pointed to my new url. I tried a 301 reroute but it did not work. Right now everything seems to be pointing to the correct place. Is there a way I can do that without wordpress.com mapping?

    Hey there!

It’s not the domain mapping here that’s causing things to work properly. It’s more likely a coincidence.

Domain mapping is like a bridge that connects a domain name to a website. You bought a bridge here at WordPress.com, but your domain name and website aren’t hosted here, so your domain mapping is not connecting anything. It’s a bridge that isn’t spanning two points.

If you’re nervous about disconnecting here, I won’t touch a thing. You can check in with your domain registrar and your website’s new host. Chances, are the mapping is set up between them. The mapping here at WordPress.com is extraneous.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

But if there is a link to http://simplelife mom.wordpress.com/whatever-post out there on pinterest, etc. How is it redirected to http://simplelifemom.com/whatever-post ? It seems like it would be you all that would redirect them to the new site, taking out the “WordPress” insert in the url…. otherwise wouldn’t it just take them to my old site, because that’s what it was doing, but is not now.

Thank you for you patience in helping me understand.

    Hey there!

Thank you for you patience in helping me understand.

You’re asking great questions and I’m happy to help!

Mentioning your concern about Pinterest makes everything clear to me now. You should indeed keep your domain mapping setup here, then. I didn’t realize you had so many xxx.wordpress.com links out there in the world. As long as you keep your domain mapping setup here, your external links will keep on functioning.

Thank you so much for that additional information! Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much, and nice work!
