domain mapping

I am about to renew my registration but I’m not sure I actually need the ‘domain mapping.’ (I originally added that but don’t think I really understood its purpose at the time.) Essentially, I just wish to register for a primary domain e.g., mysite.com (vs. mysite.wordpress. com). I don’t have a domain anywhere else that I want to link to wordpress; so I don’t think I need domain mapping. How then can I opt out of domain mapping from my renewal? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Anita,

The domain you linked, bigblueforever.com, is apparently not mapped and was purchased directly from WordPress.com. Such domains don’t need to be “mapped” as they automatically point to your blog.

Mapping is for those domains which were purchased elsewhere and now have to be pointed to ‘yoursite.wordpress.com’ address. So in this case, you’re correct that you don’t need mapping.

Now, is there any other domain under your account which has the “mapping” upgrade? Please head over to My Upgrades page, see if it lists any “Domain mapping” upgrade.

    Hi ehtis,
Thanks for your assistance. I don’t have any other domains with the “mapping.” I can’t figure a way to opt out of the “domain mapping” charge online as I don’t wish to pay this charge when I renew; and wordpress.com seems to not have a way of directly contacting support until October 20 (according to their message). So I’ll wait until then to try and follow up directly. Thanks again, I appreciate your comments!

Hi again ehtis, just though you might like to know: WordPress folks did get back to me. Apparently I need the “domain mapping” to ensure “bigblueforever.com” doesn’t appear as “bigblueforever.wordpress.com” even though I did purchase the domain name only from wordpress. I was confused with the terminology. WordPress folks confirmed: “To keep your WordPress.com site running as bigblueforever.com, you’ll need to renew both Domain Mapping and Domain Registration…..Domain Mapping can be used with domains registered with us (that’s your case) AND with domains not registered with us.”

So looks like that is what I need to keep doing even though I’m not registered in any other way externally. I guess the domain mapping in my case is like an upgrade, to make sure my site appears the way I want.

    cheers,
    Anita

  • Anita,

That’s the official response and it’s correct as well. I got confused where I mentioned mapping external domains to your blog. That’s also a feature, but it’s separate from the domain registration done here at WordPress.com, which includes all the charges and allows your domain to point to xyz.wordpress.com.

Thanks again for your review. cheers, Anita

  • Of the $26 we pay for domain from WordPress.com, $5 is for the domain name, $13 is for mapping and $8 is for domain privacy protection.

Standalone domain mapping would cost only $13 but you pay the rest of the charges to the domain registrar from whom you bought the domain.
