Domain mapping and custom CSS – Help please!

    Hi there.

I’m a bit confused about how WordPress works.

    DOMAIN MAPPING

    – I have my own domain registered with hosting, but it seems as though I have to pay ‘Credits’ in order to marry up my domain to WordPress, is this correct, or is it a free service?

    – By the looks of things, according to some info I’ve read on WordPress, it’s a very simple procedure to map my domain to WordPress…. Then, this VISUAL QUICKSTART book on WORDPRESS seems to be giving me the impression that it is a much more complicated process – eg – lots of fiddly things to do with downloading MySQL stuff, PHP etc etc. Is this the case? SO CONFUSED, would love some closure on this.

    CUSTOM CSS

    – Is it free for me to create my own blog ‘look’ or do I actually have to pay ‘Credits’ to do this?

    Thank you, much appreciated.

If you want your wordpress.com blog to show up under your registered domain, then you will need domain mapping.

Since you have hosting, you could download and install the wordpress software from wordpress.org and install it on your host, download and install a theme and then export your wordpress.com blog and import it into your new wordpress install. With your own install you would have access to your CSS and the underlying theme files and such.

If you want to customize the look of your blog here at wordpress.com, then the customizing CSS is only way. Custom CSS does not control or change the structure of the blog, just the look (colors, fonts, some control over positioning, widths, etc.). To customize the CSS you would have to have the paid CSS upgrade, and the experience to modify it. There are online tutorials and such where you can learn.

This does a pretty good job of explaining the differences between .com and .org.

There is also a free service that will install wordpress on your host and set it up free of charge: http://install4free.wordpress.net/
