domain mapping and linking

I just registered a domain and was looking over the KB articles about domain mapping. I can’t seem to find the answer to one question, though. If my new domain (ruffledcrow.com) is mapped to my blog (sacredcalf.wordpress.com) will links using the sacredcalf.wordpress.com domain still work?

    Thanks in advance,
(soon to be) the ruffled crow

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    What are “KB articles “?

The reason we purchase domain mapping is so that all the URLs from the .wordpress.com root blog (sacredcalf.wordpress.com) when clicked seamlessly redirect to the same content in the post under the new domain URLs (ruffledcrow.com)

The pagerank and authority the (sacredcalf.wordpress.com) blog earned was earned by the .wordpress.com URLs and belongs to them. It’s not transferable. so what that means is the domain starts from zero. In about 4 – 6 months time the same content will all be re-indexed by search engines under the (ruffledcrow.com) domain URLs and all things being equal the blog will probably have the same pagerank and authority it had prior to purchasing domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/

If you do not renew your domain mapping for (ruffledcrow.com) then all those domain URL’s are broken and the blog reverts to the old (sacredcalf.wordpress.com) .wordpress.com URLs. Then all those broken links are there for months until the search engines like Google index them again under the .wordpress.com URLs and clear their caches (3 – 6 months).

Domain mapping is not an instaneous process. It can take up to 72 hours for the domain name propagation to take place but rarely does. What essential is folloing all the step very carefully > Instructions For Registering a New Domain For Your Blog to activate and Update Primary Domain. Therefater you must be patient and wait for the propagation to take place as we have no control over when your ISP will flush their DNS cache.

Do not start changing any URLs. When the process is completed what you see on the Admin side of the blog will be the old (sacredcalf.wordpress.com) .wordpress.com URLs. What you visitors will see is the (ruffledcrow.com) URLs. That’s normal. Until the progapagtion is complete you will see switching back and forth between the two.

    KB = Knowledge Base

Thanks for your replies, and I really appreciate the overview on the process (and the primer on pageranks. good to know!). My question however, was whether an “old” URL (ie: sacredcalf.wordpress.com/2011/03/27/a-beautiful-neighborhood/) will still work after the ruffledcrow.com domain has been mapped (say someone has a post bookmarked for instance) or if it forces the mapped domain (ie: ruffledcrow.com/2011/03/27/a-beautiful-neighborhood/) and 404s the ‘old’ domain URLs.

Honestly, it’s probably not really an issue as the blog isn’t read by many folks at all, but I don’t want either of my readers to lose track… :)

    thanks again

I think I did such a great job of explaining that I ought to publish what I posted (patting self on back).

Whenever the original URL is clicked anywhere on the interent the person who clicked it will be seamlessly redirected to the same post under the domain URL.

Excellent! Exactly what I was curious about.

And yes, you should publish it. There’s a bit of ‘how it really works’ knowledge in there that would be interesting to folks like me that are new to working with domain redirects and such.

    best regards,
