Domain mapping and privacy

I just upgraded from free to Premium paid plan and am confused re domain mapping and privacy registration. It was free included in the plan, it automatically made it private at no cost as part of the plan for this year. But is the privacy something I will have to renew every year to prevent scammers from getting my data? Not sure what they mean by the next 6 months in statement below? Is there anywhere on my site I can check out that the privacy registration is there? Also will I have to renew the domain name every year or will that be part of the plan renewal process as well?
Note: If your domain name expires within the next 6 months you will also need to renew the domain registration and mapping in order to make your registration information private. Once you renew the domain with private registration added the privacy will start immediately and the domain will be renewed for another year from its current expiration date.
Also, it did something called domain mapping but didn’t charge me for it, it was on the bill I printed off, but I don’t recall selecting it on the screen – is this just a feature redirecting people to my new domain site from the old? Does it expire, ie will it have to be renewed at some future time also?
Also, where can I check the privacy of my domain on the screen to make sure it is there?

All WordPress.com plans include a free domain credit with optional privacy protection. Your plan includes the domain registration, privacy, and mapping, at no extra cost.

You don’t need to renew privacy, domain mapping or your domain separately as it comes with your plan. It will all be good with your yearly renewal of your premium plan.

You can check details at a WHOIS service to know whether your registration is private or not.

That statement is with respect to expiration of any additional domains that you might want to register or have registered with WordPress.com. The domain thehomeplaceweb.com comes with your premium plan and doesn’t apply to statement above.
