Domain Mapping between 1and1 Domain and WordPress Blog
-
I am hoping that someone can point out what is undoubtedly an obvious error in my efforts to implement domain mapping in wordpress with a domain that I purchased from 1and1. Although, I think I have followed the instructions correctly, the URL decisionhacker.com takes me to a 1and1 default page rather than my wordpress blog.
Background;
– I have the domain name decisionhacker.com registered with 1and1
– I have a wordpress blog http://decisionhacker.wordpress.com/Steps;
– I followed these instructions at http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
– i.e. I updated the DNS server settings on the 1and1 domain to ns1.wordpress.com, ns2 etc
– I added the domain name decisionhacker.com to my wordpress blog (and paid for an upgrade)
– I made the decisionhacker.wordpress.com the primary
– I checked that the DNS had propogated using http://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/decisionhacker.com which sure enough points to wordpressHowever, going to decisionhacker.com still gives me the default 1and1 page
Can anyone help?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi. Decisionhacker.com works for me. Be patient while it resolves everywhere around the world.
I noticed that it looks like you forgot to set it as a primary domain.

Thank you for your response airodyssey.
So, do you see (my new blog) when you go to decisionhacker.com? If so, that’s great and I just need to be patient :-)
Finally, should I make decisionhacker.wordpress.com as my primary or decisionhacker.com?
Thank you again

As the support doc says, you “select the radio button next to the domain you just mapped to your blog”, so that’s decisionhacker.com.
That way, whenever someone goes to decisionhacker.wordpress.com, the address on their browser will be automatically replaced with decisionhacker.com

Makes sense. Thank you again. Still not working for me, but I guess the 72 hours are not up yet and if it works for you, then it should fall into place tomorrow. I’ll ping another message once it has.

Hi timethief
Yes, I checked the propogation early on and it appeared to have propogated to wordpress. I just checked again and the IP addresses are wordpress but when I go to decisionhacker.com it still takes me to a 1and1 domain default home page. -
http://decisionhacker.com takes me to a wordpress.com site wearing the Bueno theme with a Hello World post on the 26th of August.
Log out, clear your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and try again.
How soon it is going to show up for you is entirely dependent on how often your ISP updates their nameservers. Some do it very frequently and some it seems only do it every few days or so.
Second possibility is that your ISP is using an invisible proxy server that is not updating very frequently. Again some ISPs let this go too long before refreshing. The proxy servers as I say are invisible and are used to lessen bandwidth and top speed things up for their customers, but they can get clogged up or over loaded and need to be rebooted.
Another possibility is that your computer’s DNS cache needs to be cleared. Typically this happens when you shut down or reboot your computer, but some systems sometimes get stuck and don’t do that like they should. You can google clearing a DNS cache for your operating system and find instructions on the internet.

I have rebooted, cleared the browser cache and executed an ipconfig /flushdns but still see the 1and1 domain default home page. However, given that you all see the worpress.com site then I can only assume that I have done all the right things thus far and that my ISP updates it’s nameserver more slooooowly than I would really like and that it will all work … eventually.
Thank you for all your help so far, I will keep checking and update you when my ISP has caught up with the rest of the world.

All working now. Thank you airodyssey, timethief and thesacredpath. Your guidance has been invaluable.
