Domain mapping- Change primary custom domain to another custom domain

  Please help me be sure I am handling this process correctly.

  Currently my primary domain is rootshairlounge.com. I want to change my primary domain to the new rootshairdevotion.com. Both are registered at godaddy. I believe I need to map “the new” existing domain in wp.com, then once that is complete, go back in and change my primary domain. Please advise if this is right.

  I have changed the NS in go daddy for the new domain already.

  Also of concern is that I have some good local ranking for rootshairlounge.com. Will I lose my ranking by handling the primary URL change this way? I will keep this domain and point it to the new primary unless there is a better solution for this process. Thank you for your assistance.

  Changing a domain often causes some loss of search engine ranking. But there is not really any way around it.
