Domain mapping direction

  • Unknown's avatar

    Me: http://politicalbooks.wordpress.com (still in construction)

I just registered a domain name. (yay for me?)

I’ve got a host too. So I’m gonna want to use domain wrapping.

Here’s my question, when domain wrapping to a website, where do they go? Do I have to set up a subdirectory? Can I set up a sub directory? Can I just have the wordpress blog be my index.HTML page? How do I do that? Or should I just buy the domain mapping upgrade and then email support with questions?

    Thanks in advance. :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There might be some confusion here.

Please detail out exactly what you are wanting to do.

Are you wanting to host your blog on your new host or are you wanting to leave the blog here but with your own domain name?

I want to leave it here. As I understand it, I can either use wp.org on my site, OR have wp host my whole site, OR use the domaiin mapping to hide my me.wp.org URL. I want the last one. But until I read about it here I had no idea such things were possible so I don’t know how it works. (I’m not the most computer-brilliant guy around.:)

OK, you don’t actually need the hosting package unless you are going to move your blog off of wordpress.COM and go self-hosted.

I wrote the following up for another poster, but they never came back and answered my other question so I guess it was really written for you. :)

You can also use this for reference: http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

    1. Go to the registrar where you registered your domain and log into your account.

    2. Change the nameservers for your domain to the following:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

    3. Wait 24 hours and go to http://www.dnsstuff.com/, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your registered domain name (http://yourdomain.com) in the “whois” search field. If it still shows the old nameservers, wait and check again in a few hours. Keep checking until it shows the wordpress.com nameservers. When it shows the wordpress.com name servers, then you can proceed with the domain mapping.

    4. Go to your wordpress.com dashboard and go to settings > domains. Enter your registered domain name in the field at the top of the page (don’t include the http:// as it is assumed) Note: WordPress.com will not map to a www subdomain so do not include the www. Click “add domain to blog.” (Note: If someone puts the www in with your domain name when going to your blog, they will still get there.)

    5. Your domain should then appear as a choice below that button and next to the domain name it will say, “put blog here.” Click that button.

    6. The page should refresh and you will then be asked to make the payment for the domain mapping though PayPal. WordPress waits until this point to ask for payment so that they can make sure that the nameservers are properly pointing to wordpress.COM and that you haven’t made any typos or anything that would mess up the process.

WordPress will not map to, and will not allow subdirectories. If you wanted to map to a subdomain such as blog.mydomain.com that can be done (using a CNAME) and is outlined in the domain mapping support document.
