domain mapping. don’t show wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    I own stylemepretty.com

I singed up for domain mapping.

    Currently, when someone types in:

    http://www.stylemepretty.com

    they are redirected to:

    stylemepretty.wordpress.com

I’d like the domain my users see when they are on my site always be http://www.stylemepretty.com.

Is there anything I can do to configure this behavior? Is this a separate upgrade?

    Thanks,

    Abby

I’m so sorry but in a word the answer is “no”. There are two choices and wordpress chose the one without www. If wordpress had chosen to have the www then 30% of people online and most of the search engine spiders.
You can verify this by checking the forum search box as others have previously asked and Mark has replied as well as drmike. http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=6185&replies=3

TT, I don’t think Abby’s concern is really with the “www” issue. I think she just wants her domain mapping to work, directing people to stylemepretty.com rather than stylemepretty.wordpress.com.

Abby, have you checked in your dashboard, in the “domains” area under “options”? When I did the domain mapping recently, it showed two domains – the one with “wordpress” in it and the one without. Next to the one without, it had a link that said, “put blog here.” I clicked it, and that was the final step to making the domain mapping work. Other than that, the prior steps involve going to the site on which you registered the domain and redirecting it to wordpress. (See the domain mapping entry in the FAQ)

    Does any of that help?

  • Abby,

I went ahead and activated domain mapping for your blog by following the instructions growthmadness provided. If you go to http://www.stylemepretty.com you will now see your WordPress.com blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

    sheesh – I’m sorry I mis-understood the actual re-direction point being made :(
but I’m glad growthmadness & barry were on top of this :)
Aside from that point, I know www information I dug up was correct because drmike says so thus, my question why do the the urls above have the www?

This is great…thank you so much!

Hi there, I got the same problem with abbyjean.

I followed the instructions in the FAQ and whatever growthmaddess mentioned, I’ve also done it. I’ve clicked on ‘put blog here’ numerous times but whenever I go into my domain http://www.asian-beauty-secrets.com, i keep getting redirected to my blog. I thought it the domain still remain same with my wordpress blog content showing up.

    Can someone help me?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok..i managed to solve my own problem. I didn’t realise that by clicking ‘put blog here’ numerous times, I’m actually making the switch between redirecting to blog and redirecting to domain. I overlooked it. Whoa… :)

Please forgive me for being such a dim bulb.
I am trying to change powhatanlife.wordpress.com to powhatanlife.com

I am hosting powhatanlife.com on my server account floramcdonald.com

Changed the NS files per instructions.
    Clicked on “put blog here”.
My blog address is still powhatanlife.wordpress.com and when I type in just powhatanlife.com a screen pops up that says “new host floramcdonald.com”

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Something’s up with the nameservers. Link. They’re still pointed to the nameservers of server265.com. These need to be changed with your domain registar.

For a dotcom, they should be getting updated every five minutes. I would get with your registar and ask them what the hold up is.

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike

Thank you, drmike, I’ll check with them now.

Hi, i got the same problem as abbyjean and bewitched 123. I followed everything mentioned by growthmadness but my domain mapping is still not working. My domain name is thebullrunner.com and my blog url is thebullrunner.wordpress.com.

Domain name purchased via yahoo. I’ve paid for domain mapping. But when i go to bullrunner.com it still shows the yahoo under construction page. Would appreciate your help.

Actually it connects to your blog fine and is setup correctly. Link. It’s dropping it to the wp.com URL though and not the tbr.com. You need to switch by doing the “put Blog here” bit as mentioned up above.

If it still doesn’t work for you, your DNS is probably being cached. If you’re on a windows box, close out your browser, open up a command prompt and type the following:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Also clear out your browser’s cookie and file cache.

If it still doesn’t work, your ISP is caching their DNS as well and all you can do is sit back and wait for them to update.

Thanks by the way for searching first and trying to figure out your own problem. I (and probably most ofthe other volenteers here) wish more folks would do that. :)

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike

Wait a minute, what is the domain? You say with both with and without the ‘the’ in there.

With the ‘the’ it looks fine and its’ just a dns caching issue.

Okay, sorry if there’s a lag between posts that i don’t know about. But i posted a few minutes earlier and i still haven’t seen it up so i’m reposting.

Mark and drmike, thanks for the help. I got it fixed 2 days ago. But a few minutes ago, while I was working on the blog and without touching anything that had to do with the domain portions, things went awry. When I go to thebullrunner.com it goes to the blog but changes the address to thebullrunner.wordpress.com again. What happened? It was working alright already yesterday (as in if you type thebullrunner.com it will lead you to the blog but the address remain as thebullrunner.com

Hope you can help. I’m on a mac so i couldn’t do the ipconfig thing. Cleared cache and cookies. Didn’t understand the dns chart you sent though :P

Go to Dashboard -> Upgrades -> Domain and click on the link labeled “Put blog here.” You currently have it setup for the wp.com access to be the default, not the tbr.com domain.

I was just pointing to the chart to show that the wordpress nameservers where in pace on your domain. Not a biggie. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

The entire time I thought it was supposed to be on the tbr.com! Wonder how it worked out for a day that way.

Great, thanks a lot for the help!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Not a problem. :)

(Yeah it’s tricky. I had to look at it twice myself.)

    Hi,

I have a similar problem. I have domain onlinebharatanatyam.com and would like it to redirect to http://bharatanatyam.wordpress.com/. It looks like the name servers have been updated http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=onlinebharatanatyam.com but when I type in onlinebharatanatyam.com, it shows up the default site hosted by webhero (where I registered my domain).

    Many Thanks in anticipation!
