Domain Mapping feature

Is it really worth purchasing it if you can just have your custom domain redirect to your blog? Or am I missing something ?
-
I do think it’s worth it. My domains are mine and I can move them and my blog content to another registrar if I want to. I can hire a web host and move my content out and onto a self hosted WordPress.org install, and even move it back again to WordPress.com and my visitors still click the same link and they are seamlessly redirected.
I would like to refer you to this thread > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/improvements-for-wordpress-blog?replies=11

If you are asking whether you should buy the domain mapping upgrade vs. simply “masking” your domain name, I suggest you read this:

I get it now. So if I choose to map my custom domain to my blog, I take it I have to buy the DNS hosting service separately from my registrar too ?
Thanks for your time.

The difference is in which domain is shown for all pages and used in the links. If you just redirect a custom domain to your blog, the real domain name for the blog will still be the one with wordpress.com in it. If you setup domain mapping, then the real domain for the blog will be the custom one.
I think by DNS hosting, you mean the domain mapping upgrade. Yes, if you purchased a domain through an outside registrar, then you have to purchase the domain mapping upgrade here in order to map that custom domain to your WordPress.com blog. Like so: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

airodyssey, I contacted my registrar asking them first about masking my domain to wordpress, and they told me that I had to purchase the DNS hosting package separately as it’s not provided for free. That’s why I wasn’t sure if I still had to get it for the Mapping. I don’t have experience with domains really. I only set up a subdomain to mask a webpage before.
designsimply, no I mean DNS hosting for the above reasons.
Thanks again.
