Domain mapping fees
-
I am attempting to upgrade to domain mapping. I understand I will pay $12 a year for mapping and $5 a year for domain registration. Because I am checking “make my personal information private” do I have to pay the additional $8 as well? If I don”t elect to pay the $8 fee, will my personal information be made public?
Thank you,
Kathleen
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Kathleen. That is correct. The difference between public and private domain name registration is explained here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/ -
I had already read that, but the fees are not explained anywhere, until it comes time to pay.
Thank you for replying. -
I put the URL there because I thought your question was mostly about the difference between public and private domain name registration.
This being said, I agree with you about the prices not being accessible from the support doc. I still thought it was $9.97 for domain mapping until I actually went to the Dashboard > Upgrades…

You are right — the fees should be explained somewhere before someone is ready to upgrade. I will send a suggestion about this to Support.
Thank you. -
Another question: I did the domain mapping upgrade. Does this mean I will no longer have ads placed on my blog?
Thank you,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen. No, the same rules apply as for a regular WordPress.com blog. The only difference is that your URL no longer ends in “wordpress.com”.
There’s the possibility of having no ads on the site, but that costs an extra $29.97 per year… Depending on your kind of website and audience, it might not be worth it. Details here:
