Domain mapping for $13
-
I want to map a domain that I own to my WordPress site. Their support site says this option is available for $13. But… when you follow instructions to map a domain, it requires a Premium plan for $99. How can I get the $13 option to work?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Domain mapping can only be added to a site as part of a paid plan. Adding additional domain mappings on top of those already in your plan costs $13, but the first one must be as part of a plan:

I don’t mind purchasing the lowest plan for under $3/month, but it appears that my only option for domain mapping is the premium plan, which is more than I want to spend.
A colleague of mine uses a free WordPress account and maps her website for the $13 yearly fee. I wonder if this a new requirement to have a Premium plan…. If there’s a way to utilize domain mapping at a lower cost plan, please advise. Thanks!

You can use the personal plan for domain mapping. In that case you need to purchase the plan first by going to My Site ->Plans, then you can add the mapping afterwards.
Older accounts had the ability to buy mapping as a standalone upgrade, and as long as they keep renewing it they can use the existing upgrade. But for a bit more than a year now domains can only be added as part of a plan for new upgrades.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

That’s quite unfortunate.
As an amazing organization that commendably calls its support representatives “Happiness Engineers,” WP.com should know that this business decision will most likely make many of its otherwise-loyal customers LESS happy. :-(

This is quite unfortunate add very misleading. I went to redirect a domain name and saw the $13 and let my non profit know and they gave me the go ahead but then went I went to actually do the mapping I realized it was going to be $99 instead of the original $13 reported to my non profit. Very unfortunate.

A site redirect and a domain mapping are two completely different things. The Site Redirect does cost $13 a year, and is used if you want to direct traffic away from a WordPress.com site to a completely different site.
If you want your WordPress.com site to show at a domain you bought somewhere else, you need domain mapping instead. It is effectively the exact opposite of a redirect, as it sends traffic from a custom domain to your site and lets your site show at that domain in a browser. Domain mapping can only be purchased as part of a plan, but you can use the Personal Plan of $35.88 instead of the Premium Plan of $99 to do that as well.

Thank you for the explanation as i’ve been working on mapping my domain for a few hours now at the previous rate. Quite sad though that the previous domain mapping service of WP at $13.00 only was discontinued.
