Domain Mapping Gone

  • Unknown's avatar

I had this domain mapping all set up two days ago; changed the name servers, etc. and it was working. About 15 minutes ago it started sending everything BACK to the old website. I’ve even checked with GoDaddy and Whois and the nameservers are for WordPress; but my mapped blog is now going back to my OLD host and I’ve had to put up a temporary page.

    Where did my website/blog go?????

And is this the ONLY place where a person can report such a large problem????

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello! I just visited http://martimillington.com/ and it’s pulling up your WordPress site. The Domain helper tool indicates that it’s been less than 72 hours since you mapped the domain. So, you might just be seeing some latency as the DNS server information propagates across all the name servers on the internet.

Typically, the name servers usually settle in within 24 hours, but it can indeed take up to 72 hours in some cases.

My “Happiness” level is below zero – not only do I NOT have a website, I don’t have a blog either – all my posts are returning 404 errors. Great job! NOT!

  • Unknown's avatar

That is NOT what I am seeing. I’m getting my old website.

  • Unknown's avatar

It can take up to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet, access to your web site may be erratic during that time. You will be the last one to see the changes. Try clearing your browser cache and forcing a page reload.

DO NOT – change any setting – if the above does not work then take a long walk – yes I am serious about the walk – every domain I have mapped took time and I was the last to see the changes due to local caching issues

  • Unknown's avatar

Why did it work and not its not working? It was fine the last two days – and now I’m back to my old site. WHY???????

  • Unknown's avatar

When I made this change, I could no longer access the cpanel at my old host. Now I can again. Something isn’t right.

  • Unknown's avatar

http://martimillington.com/ – loads fine for me

Until the internet fully updates access to your site will be erratic – what you are seeing is completely normal – take a walk – I am serious, turn off your computer for a while

I know this can be frustrating… well more like panic-inducing when your existence online appears to fall off the edge of the world. But, I think most of the servers have been propagated. I checked your site against this tool: http://checkdnspropagation.com/ and it shows your name servers are correct.

So, it may be local to the name servers on your internet provider, or possibly a DNS or local browser cache on your machine. Here’s a couple of guides to help with clearing those two things:

    Solve Common Browser Issues

    Flush DNS cache https://www.whatsmydns.net/flush-dns.html

    Hold Your Horses!

It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at martimillington.com, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cache, and try again.
    Nameservers Validated!

Congratulations! The nameservers appear to be set up correctly for martimillington.com.

This is the current Whois record.

IP Address 216.227.215.8 – 245 other sites hosted on this server

IP Location United States – California – Anaheim – Lunar Pages
    ASN United States AS15244 ADDD2NET-COM-INC-DBA-LUNARPAGES – Lunar Pages (registered Aug 09, 2005)
Domain Status Registered And Active Website

Lunar pages is my old website host. When I tell them I’m not going to renew and this goes away – is my site going to die again?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, your site would die. Do NOT let the domain expire, you can’t transfer your domain registration into WordPress.com. Mapping a domain does not transfer it to WordPress.com. That process still depends on there being some kind of third party domain registration.

If you’re unhappy with your current host (or it’s too expensive to just keep your registration there) you’ll want to find another domain registrar you can transfer your domain to in order to keep the name registered to you.

  • Unknown's avatar

My domain is registered at GoDaddy and I just renewed it. My webhost was Lunar Pages. I’m not looking to transfer the domain registration. But mapping my domain name to wordpress was so I could still maintain a “website” with my domain name, but not pay for a full blown hosting package which I cannot afford. I also set up email through GoDaddy and its working fine.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Is this normal???

I cleared my cache etc etc and I get the FIRST page of the WP site but everything else returns 404 errors. I closed my browser, typed in the web address and I’m back to the old website again.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Is this normal???

yes – read my responses above again please

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I’m experiencing a similar problem to what happened with martisiq’s website. My blog was fine last week and suddenly, WordPress is telling me I have “Non-Wordpress.com Nameservers” and that I need to update to the “NS1; NS2; NS3” servers…and my blog is not visible to me or anyone else. I have no idea how to fix this (going to “edit domains” left me more frustrated) and would greatly appreciate any and ALL help. I tried clearing my cache and cookies multiple times with no luck.

My blog: sevenintheocean.com (created with WordPress, hosted by WordPress). Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sevenintheocean – you may want to open a new topic for your problem – I think they are done with me and my whining. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Ha! I did, yesterday, but no response. This thread just looked so active I thought I could ride the wave of blogging frustration! :-) I’m glad to know I’m not the only one, hope your site turns out OK!

  • Unknown's avatar

Well for what its worth, I checked Whois and your name servers are listed as WordPress name servers.

  • Unknown's avatar

You might want to check things with your domain registrar – your domain status on Whois says “On hold – generic.” Not sure if that’s critical or not.

Mine says “Registered and Active Website.”
