Domain Mapping – I’m being forced to upgrade plans

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I own a domain name and I’d like to keep it with my provider. I keep clicking through to buy domain mapping for a domain I already own for $13 but only get the options to upgrade my plan to a Premium annual subscription for $96 (for one year). I do not want this. I want to use the option where I pay $13/year for domain mapping. Please help! Thanks.

    Hi there,

In the past, it used to be possible to purchase an individual Domain Mapping upgrade for $13/year. That was phased out around two years ago, so now if you wish to map a domain to WordPress.com, you’ll need to purchase a paid plan.

You do not necessarily need the Premium Plan to use domain mapping though, the Personal Plan will work just fine: https://wordpress.com/pricing

Thanks, and sorry about the double post.

I’m confused tho because it’s all over the help pages that you can still buy domain mapping for $13/year:

    See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

I also have a screenshot from the page where you can choose domain mapping that says it’s $13/year. After two years, I would assume they’d have changed this!

I wish they would honor it because this was the main reason I chose to use WordPress.com for my site.

Also this page really implies (or just actually states flat out) that you can map your domain for $13/year:

Hmm…I’ll tag staff about that, you’ll likely receive a response within a few hours. :)

    Thanks! Appreciate the help.

  • Hi there,

If you already have a registered a mapped a domain any additional mapping is $13.

Also, on the support document you mentioned, we clearly state at the beginning that a plan is needed to map a domain:

Or if you prefer to keep your domain and site at different providers, you also have the option to “map” your existing domain to your site. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.
