Domain mapping issue

  • Unknown's avatar

My client had been using the custom domain dellablooms.org that she purchased from wordpress, but she wanted to change it to a new one she has purchased elsewhere at dellabloomsandevents.com . A month ago, I mapped it for her and it was working great. Switched the .com to be the primary domain. Now that her .org has expired, though, EVERYTHING has stopped working and it says she has to renew the .org. Help? Can’t her custom wordpress domain be bypassed? I thought I already had done it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Oh no! This blog’s domain dellablooms.org expired yesterday!

Unfortunately you cannot access this blog from dellablooms.org any more. This domain name expired on Monday, April 21, 2014 and will soon be canceled.

I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks very much. Something to add, I noticed this prompt at the bottom of the error message I’m seeing: “lease note the primary domain dellabloomsandevents.com was also deactivated until dellablooms.org is either renewed or canceled.”

Okay, but I’m not seeing that canceling the domain is an option anywhere on the My Domain. So if canceling the domain will solve the problem, how do I do it?

    Thanks again,
    Marissa

Okay, so I see that in order to cancel a registered domain you need to contact support and it routes to these forums. . . Is there any direct e-mail or is waiting on a response to this topic all I can do? Thanks!

All you can do is wait patiently for Staff. Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention and through all email support tickets in order of datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.

How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.

Don’t bump your thread here by posting into it again because it’s not in your best interest to post to it after it has been tagged for Staff help. Posting again moves the timestamp forward and it takes longer to get help.

Well, Happiness Engineers, situation resolved. It just wasn’t reasonable for my client to let her website stay down for such a long time pending your response, so today we have renewed her inactive domain. We are surprised by how inefficient WordPress’s support system seems to be. :/ I wonder if you guys would benefit by adding a priority system to your “ModLook” tag? Like “ModLook1” for problems where business websites are actually down, “ModLook2” for personal websites down, “ModLook3” for problems where the website is still functional and less urgent, etc.

Just out of curiosity, this time next year when we want to discontinue dellablooms.org (again) how far in advance should we get the support topic going? Do not want to have a repeat of this week-long down time….

Probably best not to try to renew anything over a long weekend, let alone a four day weekend.

  • Hi there Marissa!

Sorry for the time it took to get to this thread. We are experiencing somewhat of a backlog and we are working hard to answer them one by one.

Thanks @timethief and @raincoaster for covering for us!

To get to your question, if your domain “dellablooms.org” is already expired yet have set “dellabloomsandevents.com” as your primary domain, I honestly don’t see why that would cause your website to stop working.

Could you have by any chance captured a screenshot of the error message?

    Take a Screenshot

In the meantime, I’ll have my team take a look at this and report back to you if I hear something. Thanks for your patience. Cheers!

    Thanks for the response, “Druesome.”

I’m afraid I didn’t make take a screenshot while it was down. It was just a blacked out screen overlaying her dimly visible site with the message:

“Oh no! This blog’s domain dellablooms.org expired yesterday!
Unfortunately you cannot access this blog from dellablooms.org any more. This domain name expired on Monday, April 21, 2014 and will soon be canceled.”

And below that, visible to administrators was the message, “Please note the primary domain dellabloomsandevents.com was also deactivated until dellablooms.org is either renewed or canceled.”

It seems like having the dormant domain still associated with the account was somehow screwing up the mapping?

  • Thanks for getting back to me!

I’ve reported this to our developer team and added in the details you provided. Apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Thanks for your patience on this one. Cheers!

  • Hi there!

I’ve gone ahead and given you a refund for the domain that you were forced to purchase to get your other domain working again. Please give it a day or two for the funds to show up again in your statement. Really sorry about the inconvenience this has caused you. Thank you!

Thanks! I’m still interested in hearing if we have any ideas how to avoid this problem next year. :)

  • You’re welcome! I’ll let you know as soon as I hear from the team. Cheers!

  • Hi Marissa!

I’m still interested in hearing if we have any ideas how to avoid this problem next year. :)

The overlay message you’re seeing does have a “Cancel this domain” button. Please check this screenshot:

Should you run into the same problem next year, please click on the button to cancel it. Or you can approach us months before so we can cancel it for you. Thank you!
