domain mapping not working
-
Hi. I’m sure I could probably find some information on this topic if I had a lot of time to search but I have 3 boys under the age of 6 and they are requiring an unusual amount of supervision and discipline this morning. Please accept my apologies but I just need a quick answer–please!
I signed up for a wordpress blog this morning (melandloys.wordpress.com) with the hopes of mapping my domain (www.melandloys.com–and eventually the content) to it. The domain is hosted with Go Daddy and I think I created the nameserver entries correctly. I paid the 10 credits with WordPress to map the domain to the WordPress blog but now when I click http://www.melandloys.com, it points to the parked page at Go Daddy. What have I done wrong? Have I just not allowed enough time for the changes to take place?
I’m a bit confused because I had a Squarespace account (melandloys.com, personal blog) and a WordPress blog (melaniejohnson.name, business website) and I’m basically trying to switch the two. The Squarespace one (www.melaniejohnsondesign.name) seems to be working properly now but the WordPress one isn’t (actually http://melandloys.wordpress.com works but I want it to be http://www.melandloys.com).
My brain is too tired and confused to figure out what I’ve done wrong, so any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

FWIW, I *have* read this FAQ and to the best of my knowledge, I’ve followed these steps:
-
It’s called Patience. It takes time for the DNS to propagate. When I click on http://melandloys.wordpress.com I am redirected to http://melandloys.com/ (Note that the www is stripped out here at wordpress.com)
-
Not only that, but if you’d done a quick search you’d find that domain mapping usually doesn’t go live on the weekends, probably because staff want to be around to support it. Check Monday.

@melaniejohnson
FWIW the FAQs entry you linked to contains this statement “DNS propagation could take up to 72 hours ” -
I switched 2 sites within 10 minutes of each other and the other one (Squarespace) almost immediately resolved to the new site. I didn’t think it was unrealistic to expect that the other one would also be a matter of hours rather than days. I did acknowledge in my original post that maybe the problem was my impatience but since I’m getting the following Redirect Loop error message from Firefox, I don’t think that’s the case:
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

You must have changed something. I had no problem getting the wordpress.com site to resolve to the .com site earlier but it is not working now. In fact, they are reversed: http://melandloys.com/ is resolving to http://melandloys.wordpress.com

I didn’t change anything before getting that Firefox error message. All I did was check to see if the URL was working and I got the redirect loop message. After that, I went into WordPress and looked for the hundredth time at the domains listed to see if anything looked weird and clicked (Put blog here) to reverse what I had since the other way obviously wasn’t working. You’re right: now it’s resolving the wrong way so I’ve changed it back again but I have no reason to believe that I won’t eventually get that redirect loop error message again since things are now set exactly as they were when I got it before.
Thanks anyway.

Great. Now can you mark this topic resolved?
And for future reference, you may want to link your user name to your blog as explained in the sticky, 8 Things, at the top of the forums.
