Domain mapping not working for equinoxpdx.com.
-
It’s not possible to move a domain to WordPress.com. You can however point any domain (even multiple domains) you own to your WordPress.com site, as you have done, and use the domain for email addresses, as you have also done.
Other than keeping your domain current at your registrar, and your mapping upgrade current with us, there’s nothing else you need to do.

Shawna,
I thought that, just like when we paid for a .com domain upgrade for artmassagepdx.wordpress.com, for $18, that there might be a way to procure the equinoxpdx.com domain from the 1and1 registrar. We would be glad to pay the additional $5 to get rid of 1and1.
Thanks,

I totally understand. And we’re well aware that our users want this capability. Unfortunately, being able to offer this is a little bit more complicated than it might seem due to the way registrars work.

Here is what I learned from 1and1 about a domain transfer…
- The authorization code for the domain equinoxpdx.com is:
[removed]
Your new registrar will need that code for starting the change of
registrar process. Please remove whatever info should not be shared. It seems as though 1and1 is ready to release the domain, so that I could simply ask WordPress.com to use it on the website.
Thanks,

Hi there!
I’ve removed the authorization code for transferring your domain so that no one can transfer it out from under you. I highly suggest that you go back to 1and1 and lock your domain again in case anyone saw the code before I could remove it.
WordPress.com is not able to accept domain transfers. There is no way that I can do this for you. The only way that you can set up a domain that has been registered through another company is to set up domain mapping like you have already.
We are not capable of accepting domain transfers.

Shawna,
Last attempt at figuring this out. I spoke with 1and1, and the domain name had been unlocked since they gave me the authorization code last week. I have relocked.I was told that I could remove the domain name from 1and1 by unlocking and setting the registration as non-private, and then, I should be able to claim the name for the equinoxacupunctureandmassage.wordpress.com site. At that time, I suppose I could go into my domains, change the primary domain from equinoxpdx.com(or leave it??), and then I could register the equinoxpdx.com domain with WordPress.com?!?!?
So, I am proposing unregistering the domain from 1and1 and then reregistering it with WordPress.com. Would that work?
If you can’t help, I will try the forums again, to open a new thread on this topic.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi svanbk1, it sounds like perhaps there’s been a miscommunication here.
First of all, I’d like to reassure you that your domain equinoxpdx.com is absolutely correctly pointing (mapped) to your WordPress.com site equinoxacupunctureandmassage.wordpress.com now, and your site is working just fine. There is nothing else you need to do there, unless you wish to add email addresses as Shawna was assisting you with.
Second, in terms of your domain registrar, we cannot accept an incoming domain transfer. That means if you have an existing domain such as equinoxpdx.com that was registered elsewhere, it cannot be transferred to WordPress.com.
You are more than welcome to find a new registrar and transfer it away from 1and1.com, but WordPress.com isn’t one of those options.
Also, when you posted your authorization code in the forums, Shawna removed it for your domain’s security, as that code functions somewhat like a password, authenticating the user as the owner of the domain.
I hope this clarifies things for you.

Also, I should point out that if you cancel your domain with 1and1.com, there are no guarantees that it will ever be made available for registration again with us. Once a domain is cancelled, the registrar can do with it as they wish, including putting it up for auction.
As I described to another user, it’s like buying a shirt from a store and then returning it. The store might put it back on the rack but they are free to do anything with it that they want in the meantime, and you might not ever be able to buy it again.

Thanks. I just thought there had to be a work-around. Guess not. If the client wants, though, I would imagine that just dropping equinoxpdx.com, and closing out the 1and1 account, and then mapping to say equinoxpdx.org would work…what charge would that incur? I imagine we’d lose out on the balance of the year for the previous mapping, right?

It looks like the domain equinoxpdx.com has been registered since 2011. If that’s the case, and they have been using it all that time, it has built up considerable SEO juice in that time, and changing the domain to something brand new that isn’t known anywhere would be a pretty risky thing to do. In other words, I would strongly recommend against this course of action for a business.
If they aren’t happy with 1and1.com, you can move the domain to another registrar like Namecheap or GoDaddy or something else (there are dozens out there). Keep in mind the registrar really is just holding the domain record and making sure it’s available online. They don’t control anything else about a website.
If the client really wants to change the domain, then you could register a new one through WordPress.com for $18 or $26 with privacy. You could cancel the domain mapping for the equinoxpdx.com domain for 30 days, so through July 18th, for a refund.
