Domain Mapping or not
-
I own my own domain and would like to move my wordpress.com blog to the domain I have. I do not have hosting with the domain, it is only parked. If I move the blog can I use plugins for advertising, seo and such? Or do I need to have a hosting plan with my domain to get all of the plugins,,,,I can’t find the answer on the faq’s or forums.
I guess I want to know what is the advantage to do domain mapping other than having myname.wordpress.com to myname.com ?? -
You can map the domain name you have to your wordpress.com blog, but you still have all the restrictions of wordpress.com.
If you want to advertise, you are gong to have to get a web host, download and install the software from wordpress.org, and then export your blog from wordpress.com and import it into the install on your web host.

thanks for the info. Next question then. When I get the hosting for my domain, do I need to do the one click installation that I receive in my hosting plan, or do I need to download the zip file into my computer then ftp to the public folders.
Then export the blog to the files on my computer and then FTP to host?If you know of any instructions for this it would be much appreciated. I don’t have a whole lot of posts on my blog but would like to keep them.
The search engine has many of my posts indexed, how will that effect those?

You will lose all your Google pagerank and your Technorati status, as they are both URL specific. If you ever ARE going to use the domain name, use it as early in a blog’s life as humanly possible.
As to the technical details of a WP.org install, you’d find more advice over at WordPress.org. We’re all hosted by WP.com, so we dont’ do any of that.

If they have the one-click wordpress install, by all means use that. It’s much quicker, and it will make sure everything is in the right place.
After you export your blog from here, all you have to do is go to manage > import > wordpress in the dashboard on your new domain, and follow the instructions. Do note that the export from here will not contain your blogroll. You can do that separately by going to blogroll > import links on your new domain and again, follow the instructions.
If you are familiar with the dashboard here at .com, you will have no problems with the dashboard on a self-hosted install. There are a few more selections, but it’s all pretty self-explanatory.

Here is a good blog post to read through on the subject: http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/planning-to-self-host-your-blog/

Just have to wait now.I am not worried about the PR and such as the blog is only about 5 months old (still a baby)
Thanks again for the help
