domain mapping or redirect?

    My domain eighthrising.wordpress.com has a mapping to eighthrising.com. Recently I stood up a new site with a different host and pointed the nameservers where eightrising.com lives (godaddy) to my new host (bluehost). Should I cancel the domain mapping with wordpress and have a redirect put in to have eighthrising.wordpress.com point to eighthrising.com? Is the redirect the same as a mapping? Users with the old eighthrising.wordpress.com link have to be redirected to my new site.

    Yes, you don’t need the domain mapping, but you do need the site redirect upgrade. The site redirect upgrade, allows you to take traffic from your WordPress.com default address, and redirect it to a different URJ. That way you can automatically send visitors from eighthrising.wordpress.com to eighthrising.com instead.
