Domain mapping or site redirect
-
Hi.
I just moved my old blog in wordpress.com to new domain and local host. I have done domain mapping https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/ and any post in wordpress.com has already redirected to my new domain. But after migration, I notice that my visitors is decreasing. I read that I need to do 301 redirect to maintain my traffic. So, what’s difference between site redirect https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ with domain mapping https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/?
Thanks.

Hi there,
Did you migrate your followers to your new site? That’s the most likely reason for a drop in traffic. Unless you move your followers, they won’t be getting updates for posts on your new site.
To migrate your followers, you need to install the Jetpack plugin on your self-hosted site. Then you can use that to move your followers over there.
Moving Your SubscribersAnother reason for a drop in traffic can be that you’re experiencing a temporary drop in search engine hits. This is normal after changing a domain or hosting, as search engines have to reindex your site at its new home. This should automatically recover after a few weeks.
As for your domain, your domain is registered with us, and still set as the primary domain on your WordPress.com site, but pointing to a different host. That means all traffic that comes into your WordPress.com site via existing links is automatically redirected to the new site. You don’t need a site redirect as long as the domain is registered with us. You’ll only need one if you ever decide to transfer the domain away from us.
Please let me know if you have any more questions about this.
