Domain mapping pointing to wordpress.com instead of custom domain
-
Hi there,
I am having trouble redirecting my domain name to my wordpress site.
I currently have a domain name with google and need the domain “pockettomagazine.com” to point to my wordpress site (www.pockettomagazine.wordpress.com).I followed the wordpress instructions and changed the CNAME records on my domain services to be set as “NS1.WORDPRESS.COM”, “NS2.WORDPRESS.COM” and “NS3.WORDPRESS.COM”.
I also paid the $12 redirecting fee. However, when I type in “pockettomagazine.com” it leads to the wordpress main site “wordpress.com” instead of “pockettomagazine.wordpress.com”.
Please let me know what I am doing wrong here. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First of all, when you put URLs here, please preface them with http:// so they are clickable.
http://pockettomagazine.wordpress.com/
and
Now, how long have you waited? It can take up to 72 hours for the DNS to settle down and work properly. Have you set http://pockettomagazine.com/ as the Primary URL?
The good news: Your site looks awesome.

Hi Raincoaster,
Thanks for your reply.
It has been 3 days now and it http://pockettomagazine.com has been set as the primary domain since then.
However I just changed the primary domain back to http://pockettomagazine.wordpress.com so people can access some pages for the mean time.
My .com domain is still leading to http://wordpress.com homepage :( -
This is something staff will have to answer since I am pretty sure that you can’t point a google/blogger custom domain name at wordpress.com. Google/blogger has seen fit to not allow you to change the nameserver, and I think that is the only way to map it here.
I’ll tag this for staff attention and hopefully they will be around shortly and answer this for you. Don’t panic until you get the word from them though as I might not be remembering correctly.

You mentioned that you changed the CNAME and the nameservers, don’t change the CNAME. You only need to modify/add CNAME records if you’re mapping a subdomain.
For mapping a domain like yours, clear out the other DNS records (including forwarding) and just change the nameservers: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

I also paid the $12 redirecting fee.
Redirect or Domain Mapping? You should follow the instructions given above by staff-blorbo to Map an Existing Domain – you don’t want to Redirect.
-
My mistake, I didn’t realise there was also a redirecting service. I should have stated that I did indeed pay for the domain mapping service.
macmanx- My knowledge of everything involved with domain mapping is pretty shallow so I’m not sure what you mean “by clearing out other DNS records.”

At the Registrar you change only the name servers to point to WordPress.COM – there are no other DNS or any other changes (A, MX etc.) at the Registrar – just go in an delete any other changes you made.

Ok I did that and currently in my CNAME entries I have:
3 entries that point to wordpress
5 that point to ghs.google.com (for my google aps emails etc)
1 that says http://www.pockettomagazine.comIs there anything that doesn’t need to be there?
-
ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com and ns3.wordpress.com do not go into CNAME records. You have to change the actual nameserver entries to point them at the wordpress.com nameservers, and you have to make sure that all others are deleted or it will cause problems. The only nameservers that can be in the list are the ones from wordpress.com.
