Domain mapping question

I work for a university and would like to associate a custom university URL (example: “mycollege.edu”) with an existing wordpress.com site. (We like using WordPress but don’t want to host locally.) I talked with my networking people and they aren’t able to update our domain’s name servers to the addresses listed on the instruction page.

Does WordPress have a way for a state organization to map a custom URL to a wordpress.com site that does not involve remapping our name servers? For example, if we could get a static web server URL or IP address, we could point the mycollege.edu domain to it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Probably your best be would be to map to a sub-domain ( blog.mycollege.edu ) since I would think your college already has a web site so changing the name servers would really mess up the existing web site –

Exactly what did you want to do with your blog? Do you want to replace your entire college site with one here at WordPress.COM?

There’s a small group publicizing something on their own wordpress.com site that has taken on greater importance for the college, and we’d like to associate that site more closely with the college. We are not replacing the normal, locally hosted college web site; instead, we’d like to extend the mycollege.edu domain to the wordpress.com site. Does that make sense?

Yes it makes sense – map as a sub-domain so the address would be like

    small-group-blog.mycollege.edu

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

Then the blog has the mycollege.edu top level domain name and it looks like it is just another part of your regular college site

    PS – $ 13.– / year I think

You can’t do mycollege.edu/important-blog – – it is a limit to the way WordPress.COM is set up

Ha! You guys rock, my networking people agreed to do this. Thank you!

And I don’t even get paid to do this –

You be welcome & good luck
