Domain Mapping Question

I recently converted my Google Blog account to WordPress. In doing this, I now have two instances of my blog out there…here are the links:

    actionfigurecustoms.wordpress.com
    actionfigurecustoms.com/blogs

Here is the issue…the actionfigurecustoms.wordpress.com gets 90% of traffic to it via Google Image Search whereas the domain I want people to land on (actionfigurecustoms.com/blogs) gets 10%.

Will domain mapping fix my issue of getting people to the actionfigurecustoms.com/blogs site when they are clicking on images that are tagged with the actionfigurecustoms.wordpress.com address? (I understand that I would have to install my blog in the main directory to do this).

A related question…if I turn search engine crawling off on the actionfigurecustoms.wordpress.com instance, will the other domain eventually get indexed instead?

No, as far as I understand it will have absolutely zero effect. The reason you’re getting all those google image searches is that WP.com is optimized for Google Imagesearch, and all our images are hosted at blog.wordpress.com, even if you have the domain upgrade. So the search will still go to the image which is at your WP.com URL, not the other one.

Both domains are being indexed, but one just has more google juice than the other. You just need to wait it out, and it can be a period of months before they equalize. LInkbaiting in the meantime is helpful, so you get more links to your new domain.

Thanks for the response…so as far as google is concerned, they are not penalizing me for having duplicate content out there? I am worried that they will ignore the new domain as long as the actionfigurecustoms.wordpress.com exists.

No, Google is too smart for that. It just takes the new domain a long time to get enough links to rival the OLD domain; google doesn’t just transfer the juice from one to the other immediately. It took me something like four months.

Ok…that makes me less nervous :) Thanks again!!
