Domain mapping question

Hi, so I registered my domain with wordpress, it was like 17$, but then I realized I need to use another host for my site needs. I was wondering if I map my domain to another host like hostgater, do I still have to pay 17$ a year to renew my domain with wordpress because hostgator gives you a free domain and it would suck to have to pay still.

I just registered it so would it be easier to just cancel the domain and wait the 5 days to be able to use it again with another site? Or is that not how it works?

You can just point the domain you bought here at your new web host, and the domain registration itself when it comes due would only be $5 . The extra $12 is for the mapping, which you won’t need.

Do not cancel the domain. If you do, there is a 30 day period before it will be available so you would not be able to get it back for 30 days.

Registration is only $ 5– a year. Sounds like you also bought Domain Mapping which is to map your name to your WordPress.COM blog.

If you are hosting at hostgator then all you need to do is change where the name-servers for your name are pointed to point to hostgator. That is I think under Domain Management in upgrades.

You should not need the Domain Mapping – there is a short window for a refund – contact the staff and they can process a refund and save yourself $ 12–. You can contact the staff under “My Accounts” or at http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

If you just cancel the Domain Name it can take a while for it to return to the wild and you can reregister. I have read that it can be up to 30 days. After 60 days you can transfer the Domain Registration if you want (the 60 days is an internet requirement to help prevent fraud)

Hi @thesacredpath – you typed faster again – :) – on the plus side at least we agree on the advice given. Maybe I should take one of those Speed typing and spelling classes??

Okay I diddnt realize I diddnt need the 12$, thank you I will refund it and just point the site to hostgator :). One more question when I point it to hostgater, what is the site name i put in instead of ns1.wordpress.com and ns2.wordpress.com? Do I just replace the wordpress with hostgator?

  • It looks like you can get your nameservers from your HostGator welcome email.

If you don’t have that, you’ll have to contact their support department.
