Domain mapping renewed a month early?

  Hi there,

  I have registered the domain name http://www.damienowens.com elsewhere and have it mapped to my WordPress blog. My dashboard said that the mapping service was up for renewal in mid-November but I’ve received an email from WordPress telling me that it has been renewed already (on October 19th).

  Any idea what’s going on? I was planning to renew anyway – just wondering!

  I read here that they do that in case there is a problem with the credit card. If they waited till the last minute and there was a problem with your card, you could end up losing your domain name. If there is a problem, it gives them/you time to get it fixed.

  I have a domain name registered not with WordPress.COM and seems to me I start receiving “send us money” at about 90 days – all of your good registrars start the renewal clock early – we tend to think of renewals on a personal basis here but I have worked for some companies and getting a Purchase Order through the system in less than 60 days is a major battle – also people change credit cards etc. and rushing around two days before a domain name expires is a panic mode type of thing – I would rather have it sooner than later in case something hangs up.

  A couple of other notes – once a domain expires the mapping is broken and people can’t get to your site – then as some point the renewal costs go way up – seems to me it changes from $ 5– to something like $ 75. I got my domain because someone did not renew it (they were not using it) – I also know people that had the domain name lost to a squatter when their IT company messed up the renewal – the name was part of a trade mark but it still took them a long time and lots of legal fees to get their domain name back.
