Domain Mapping replaces original URL?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m thinking about adding domain mapping to my wordpress.com account. The problem is that my current address, the one that ends in wordpress.com, has been around a long time, gets good results at Google and is well known to a lot of people. Will that be preserved? If my current name is splicehere.wordpress.com and I add somethingelse.com, what happens when somebody goes to splicehere.wordpress.com? Does it continue to work?

    Thanks very much to anybody who can help.

    Yes, it will continue to work. Anyone typing in your wordpress.com URL will be redirected to your domain URL. The website will look exactly the same, only the URL has changed.

    @splicehere
    husdul is right. I just recently purchased another domain and domain mapping for it and my readers are being seamlessly transferred just as they were on the furst blog I did this with. :) Despite this, it’s a still a good idea to make your readers aware of the change in url and to ask everyone you know who has linked to your blog to change the url though.

    Great. Thanks folks. That’s very helpful.

    And I assume it will stay this way? Will the old URL be turned off at some point?

    Thanks again — Happy New Year.
