Domain Mapping Service – Administration

Hi there!
What does really happen when I map my existing domain to my wordpress blog? I ask this because when I called my domain provider this afternoon to update the domain´s name servers he said that in this case the administration and therefore the responsibility for my domain moves from my provider to internic and then to wordpress. Is this correct? And what does this mean to me? Cause problems? In case of problems with my domain who would be my contact partner?

I have not yet created a blog at wordpress.com, I just did the registration and looked for answers to the question how I can use my existing domain easily before putting time and energy in creation.
I know the difference between wordpress.com and .org.Thank you!
